suburban strip malls

whats with idiots opening up useless business's in strip malls?

I'm sitting here at 59 and Caton farm road and thinking about the history of this one storefront. years agi it opened up as a hot dog stand with lame hot dogs, it failed, then it was a sub dog restaurant, it failed.... now i see it is being reopened as a "Bagels and more sandwich shop"

Oh and did i mention theres already a panera bread and subway in this mall? I would love to meet the banker who looked at this business plan and said " ya this is a great idea, heres a check" 10-1 odds that banker was quitting that day and just wanted to F the bank.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

The stupid property owners are supposed to only allow one place to sell a certain product in the strip mall. i.e. one pizza joint, one sub/sandwich joint, one cleaners and maybe one nail shop. I agree with you that some of the shops that open up RIGHT next to each other are retarded! On Barrington Rd just north of I-90 there is a (i shit you not) Subway, Quiznos and Jimmy Johns almost next to each other all in the same stupid strip mall!

SBA dude... your government probably guaranteed all of them. Also, anyone opening any of the above referenced places probably had to put their house on the line.

Just because somebody shut down does not mean they went bk, it could be one of multiple locations. Those strip malls are fairly easy leases to get out off. The strip mall owner should be more concerned..

Every strip mall must have,

1 cleaners
1 franchise fast food place, Subway, Quizno's ect...
1 family owned food place, usually Asian
1 tanning salon
Maybe 1 Starbucks, this will add to the success of the rest of the businesses

And it has to be in front of a large box store that has a Starbucks and Subway inside it already.

Agreed... We should buy a strip mall and add the main missing ingredient, Strip Club. The other businesses will be open 2hrs prior and 2hrs after the Strip Club opens/closes. Cross promotions will flourish, buy five cover charges and receive one 6 inch sub next door. All businesses will give back change in $1..

the only bank really stupid enough to go in to strip malls is Wamu. The funny thing is they really do not provide financing for strip mall businesses.

DT Chicago has it's share of strip malls. We just don't have the parking lots that suburbia offers. Gentrification is sucking the soul out of a lot of neighborhoods. On the plus side, it's alot nicer to be able to walk around in a drunken stuper without getting mugged.

no in fact that is one of the ones i shake my head at. peoplw with more money than brains investing in dumb shit. strip malls are not "the field of dreams" just cause you build it does not mean they will come. from the moment i saw that one break ground i have swearing at that idiot.

if these people would just come to me first, i would give them a go/nogo answer on all of these decisions.

ugggghhh, Skokie is full of vacant strip malls. It's depressing, they need to level that shit and put something up worthwhile like housing.

In the 80s the standard strip mall was 3 stores.

1) convenience store
2) dry cleaners
3) Dominos
