2 Stroke Street Legal in IL?

Hey all,

I have a friend that's looking to pick up a motorbike like what he used to ride back in the 80's. It's some '74 Suzuki 750 GT I think he said. But he also said it's an oil injected two stroke.

Are two strokes even street legal anymore? It's a local sale from a friend of a friend, and the bike runs great, simply needs some light cleaning and maybe re-chroming, new seat cover etc...but I don't want him to get stuck with a bike he can't use on the street!

What's the word on this?

I have seen them around, also most scooters are smokers.

Vcook is always right!

I'll pass on the info to my friend...he really wants this bike bad, and the owner says it runs like a raped ape. He's getting it for less then $1000 I think.

Perhaps I'm getting my rules mixed with the limit for needing an L class license. Emmissions were the biggest killer of the 2cycle engine, though if you got one clean enough I suppose that could be overcome.

So it's street legal, but might not pass emissions without some tuning?

I wouldn't think it would have to go through emissions.

I know with cars there is a cutoff date where they just give a pass or drastically lowered requirements for antique vehicles or something...I have no idea what it is for bikes though.

bikes dont need to pass emissions at any state testing facility, however if manufacturers want to produce a bike it does need to meet certain standards. This is one of the reasons 2stroke streetbikes died off. However this does not impact you ability to buy, ride, register, enjoy an older 2smoke.

I know the importer of the Genuine scooters, Scooterworks USA, here in Chicago and he actually applied and got an exemption for the Stella scooter till like 2012 I think(I am not 100% sure of the date) from the EPA. California Is the only state they cannot be legaly sold new, however you can register them there from out of state so long as the scooter has like 7k miles on it. And rumor had it he has managed Cal. exemption for the 2t too!
Older machines are not banned..... Yet
For those who don't know, Stella is a 150 2t 4 speed wet clutch scooter.

All motorcycles/scooters over 150cc made after the model year 1986 are banned from US for street use. Mopeds and scooters up to 150cc are still legal.
