Theives stealing catalytic converters off parked cars

I know this has gone about the internet, its not hot news, but I've gotten two separate emails from people that just had their catalytic converters stolen from their cars in metra lots. One in Orland and one in Harvey. Avoid those lots or areas if possible.

I don't see of a way to prevent this kind of theft either. I assume they basically just take a sawzall to the cat and cut it from both ends. I don't drive so its not an issue for me.

Funny you mention this...a friend at work brought it up at lunch yesterday...he was told that Jeeps were being targeted because of easy access (due to height) and the qaulity of the cat that comes stock.

I doubt anyones getting under my Scion any time soon...not without a *really* low jack and some tall stands.

Some of those Catalatic Converters cost over 2 grand to. It takes a thief with balls though because hacking a cat off with a sawzall is not necessarily a quiet operation or task.

Yup, safe to say that SUVs would make an easy target, in fact one of the vehicles was a Jeep grand cherokee.

Just knowing that this is happening in these areas might make someone think twice and get dropped off or take the bus or even walk to the train station. Just putting it out there.

There are some cars that do not have the Cat welded and they just need to bring a wrench to unbolt it.

It might be rusted, much easier/faster to just sawzall it.

24V Battery powered sawzall Vs. Muffler pipe = Hot knife through butter.

Only chance you got is having a full stainless system- longer to cut through the pipes - but not much.

I'm thinking a portable blow torch would be a little more quiet than a sawzall.

I posted about this awhile ago. Girl at work had hers cut off last year. Jeep Cherokee. December CPD caught a bunch in the Lincoln Park Area.

It was cut through with a Sawsall sp?

The next thing is going to be people steeling other peoples gas. Get a gas cap that locks people. Seriously.

Although, someone that really wants the fuel out of your car is going to get it anyway.

Hammer and screwdriver and a couple 5 gallon gas cans. Bye bye gas.

I've had a few of them come through the shop, all SUV's due to easy access, all cut off with a sawzall. The customer complaint is usually "it was quiet when I parked it last night, now it's really loud" . Catalytic converters are anywhere from $30-$100 scrap now. We have 6 or 7 of them behind the shop now along with a big pile of aluminum that me and the other mechanic have to take to the scrap yard and split the profits .

Every Metra lot is a target. Roselle has had mainly Jeeps being hit lately but SUV's as well. Most Metra do not have cameras in the parking lot. The local PD is responsible for patroling the lots along with the remainder of their town.

I would it's pretty easy to get under someone's vehicle and take it without being seen at the right time in a crowded parking lot.

Also, do'nt leave Radar detectors and GPS units in plainview in your car. Roselle has also had a lot of burglaries to vehicles where the offenders bust out the window and grab the item and take off really quick. They scope out all the cars in the lot, see which ones are targets and then hurry and bust out and take from all the cars and off they go rather quickly.

I think a big part of the blame for this problem has got to go to the junk guys that buy these. When somebody comes in with a trunk full of converters that have been cut off, its pretty obvious they are probably stolen. If these guys would quit buying obviously stolen parts it would really cut down the incentive to steal in the first place.
