odyssey and other public speakers

I'm trying to get better at public speaking in front of a group. For the people that do it for a living, did it take you a while to get the jist of it? Did you rehearse before a conference ? As for odyssey, did you set up a plan on what to say for your motorcycle safety class? What steps do you take to make your audience pay attention and not get bored?

And no, I'm not trying to be a leader of a cult.

Toastmasters, look for a group in your area. Practicing in front of people will help more than anything.

My company put me through media training, but I had done public speaking before.

I always rehearse before I speak and I'm ready to improvise if necessary.

It took a while but you'll get used to it.

If any of you guys saw that first interview I did with NBC 5 Chicago over Thanksgiving you would have seen how bad I sucked at first. Kim Vatis kept asking me the same question phrased differently and I ended up giving her a "wtf" look.

By the time I got to CBS News I was rocking and rollling.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Just to get better at it. I can take other peoples speeches and be able to impersonate them. But my speeches suck and I have never really been good at writing those A+ type papers.

I know rehearsing is something I need to do more and set a game plan. As for teaching someone, I have to get the mindset that people don't know anything. I know how to turn a computer on. But I have to remember in a speech that other people may never have turned a computer on. (example) So let's get into using windows, windows is a great utility blah blah. OOps I forgot to tell people you need to find the power switch to get to windows. A lot of people know how to turn a computer on, but you have the 3 people that don't. So your speech just got messed up. How do you know your speech or teaching is dumbed down enough to be considered good enough for everyone. And when you need to teach how to turn a computer on, your boring 97% of the people who already know how to turn a computer on.

I got a crash course by teaching some college classes after I graduated. Several officer positions in non-profits also helped. The key is to know your material and your agenda, keep questions relevant or defer to later, and respect both your own time and others' by keeping on track.

The approach varies depending on the purpose and the stature of the participants. Know your audience, know the purpose of your presentation, and if necessary, lay out the agenda, purpose, and procedures up front.

I've been at my company for almost 2 years now. I've taught several training sessions on the application I develop and I STILL sound like a fucking jackass when I talk in front of them.

Preparation is key. Rehearse what you plan to say out loud. The better you understand the material, the more comfortable you will be. And, of course, time and experience public speaking builds your confidence.

You mean, that's when Odyssey lost his audience. Everyone started day dreaming about getting pussy for the first time.

For me, I never really had a fear of public speaking...and I'm a girl who has a slight (or not so slight) lisp at times! I think the main part is making sure you're comfortable because your audience will play off of you. Control and maintain your breathing and utilizing eye contact is important.
