Anyone been to Bolivia?

Meech, have you? Chills?

The company I work for wants to send me down there to fix a few issues they are having with a warning system at a coal mine.

I'm reading the travel warnings and it doesn't sound like a very nice place to visit. It's definitely 3rd world.

Should I go or tell them no?

Quote:
This Travel Alert is to inform U.S. citizens of the potential for political unrest throughout Bolivia leading up to and following sessions of the countryís constituent assembly to prepare a new draft constitution. The Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens defer non-essential travel to Bolivia . This Travel Alert expires on January 11, 2008.

Political and social tensions have escalated in Bolivia due to the highly polarized nature of Bolivia ís Constituent Assembly process. Recent protests and demonstrations have led to violent clashes, resulting in casualties and mass injuries in various locations throughout Bolivia . The Department recommends that U.S. citizens defer non-essential travel to Bolivia at this time. U.S. Embassy La Paz is restricting the official travel of U.S. Government employees to Bolivia during this period. Since protests and demonstrations can break out with little or no notice, U.S. citizens in Bolivia should monitor local media sources for the latest developments. U.S. citizens should avoid demonstrations at all times and exercise caution.

Strikes and road blockades are a constant risk in Bolivia and are likely to disrupt transportation at the local and regional levels. U.S. citizens are advised not to attempt to cross these blockades. In addition to affecting transportation, blockades and strikes may limit access to services and amenities. During the month of October, the Santa Cruz Administration and Auxiliary Services of Aerial Navigation suspended services in and out of Viru Viru International Airport and all domestic and international flights were cancelled for a 24-hour period. U.S. citizens should contact their airline and/or tour operators prior to commencing travel for the latest travel information.

My mother was there about 3 years ago to do some volunteer stuff. She is a really paranoid person but didn't seem that nervous about the trip. Things may have changed in three years but I don't think it's as bad as that article makes it sound. Check the gun laws, worst case scenario, buy a small pistol down there and sell it before you come back here.

tell them you'll do it if they give you some more vacation time (read: track days).

i say go, it might be a cool experience plus it will help you stand out in the company.

if you have a family then I would think twice.

No kids, no wife. I'm single. The more I read about the place the more nervous I get about going.

Then I saw this picture. I wonder if all the girls look like Miss Bolivia down there. God she's smoking hot.

Fock, all i see is a red X!

I have nothing further to add other than calling a travel clinic to find out what shots you need prior to going out there. Call 847-657-1700. Tell them where exactly where you are going, and they'll give you a list of shots you need. Then, you need to call your PCP to request for these shots.

Have fun, and take lots of pics of chicks with big asses.

*edit* just read BH's post. Fuck the shots, strap C4 on your chest.

That's a bit scary of a proposition if you ask me. Tell your company that they need to get you a passport from another country and you might be ok.

Regarding BH's post ... we could get those people back if our government actually gave a shit ... i.e. the thousands of POW/MIAs our government has abandoned throught half the world.

John McCain has been a BIG help in shutting down those efforts despite being a POW for 5 1/2 years himself!

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

Pluses of going...coaca leaves

Just did some readig about how the Bolivian president is pro-Hugo Chavez and anti "imperialist America"....reason enough to stay out.

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

I wouldn't fawking go. If it was europe, fo sur. You have a lot of friends on here and we wouldn't want to see something happen to you.

Makes a huge difference being in the military going to a 3rd country vs a civilian with no arms and alone.

Explain your concerns and ask if they would risk sending a valuable employee off to a hostile country with no resources or compensation. If they dont seem interested, make sure your life insurance policy is current.

not sure what a coca plant is but if its any kinda halucinogen you might wanna reconsider...for some reason the scene in "lord of war" when he's high in africa comes to mind.

I wouldn't do it if i was you, no job is worth risking your life.

Coca is the plant where cocaine is derived from you tard. Chewing coca makes you feel like Hercules.

I would not do that Nick....I have had run in with the "law" in Cuba, spent the night in a holding cell....I wouldn't want to get caught with anything illegal in a place like Bolivia. Scary thing about places like Bolivia, the "law" can be worse than the banditos. The banditos will just take you hostage and hope your family will pay for your release, the "police" will hold you for as long as it assumes them to do so.

Sometimes goodbye is your second chance.
