Parking lots are tricky!

NEW WINDSOR — A Beacon man died earlier this evening in a motorcycle accident in the parking lot of the business where he had just purchased the motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet.

New Windsor Police were dispatched to the parking lot of Jim Moroney’s Cycle Shop at 833 Union Ave. at about 6:08 p.m.

Dennis Walden, 56, of Beacon, was driving a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the parking lot of the shop. He had just purchased the bike, and was riding across the parking lot when he lost control and struck a parked vehicle. Police said he wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Walden was treated at the scene by New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance and Regional Ambulance, and transported to Saint Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, where he was pronounced dead.

It's amazing that this doesn't occur to people. At RC I often have to tell students that fall /crash / give up or have to be pulled from class, that motorcycling isn't for everyone. Almost all of them say that it never even crossed their mind that they can't handle or shouldn't be on a bike. Sadly a lot of these same people are the ones that have already bought the newest badest supersport that now they have to get rid of. It's funny too that our worst students with bikes ALWAYS have way to much bike for a beginner.

We should have someone do a public service announcement. The more you know.......

It also doesn't help that a lot of motorcycle shops PUSH people to buy more expensive, bigger bikes, saying that they are fine for beginners, I hear that all of the time too.
