Try using University of South Carolina's member ID found here:
I think that's what I used when ordering my parents a laptop. ND used to have one with Dell (now just Lenovo and Apple) that got me 10% off any purchase from them. I think the 10% is pretty standard at any school that's got a partnership. Poke around another school's IT office site if that doesn't work.

And you know this how?
7200rpm is a battery killer in laptop, defeats the mobility factor.
5400rpm is fine.

The XPS that Mig909 posted is a sweet config and nice deal, but about twice the bucks of the Inspiron 1525 Cerkmx posted.
The Inspiron is 30% off which seems like a very nice deal. The only thing I would change on the original config would be the video card but there doesn't seem to be an option for changing it. But for about $800, that's a nice laptop. Using the EPP on the Inspiron only saves about $20. Cerkmx, if you need an EPP code, my company has one.

I have the XPS and its very nice.

Dell does pretty good referbs. I've done much service for them in the past, and I couldn't tell a referb from "lightly used" to even *new*.

refurbished is when something is defective and the manufacturer finds it to be a simple repair and then resells them to cheap bastards. why do you think vcooks refurb'd sharp had more lines than a coke dealer.

It's been a little bit more hit and miss lately with their refurb laptops though unfortunately. Most of the time I get ones that are basically brand new, which are usually just buyers remorse returns. Every once in a while though, I get crap like a laptop with power button panel above the keyboard barely hanging onto the computer, or a screw stuck under the keyboard which makes it bend up a tiny bit. Guess their new techs just aren't that careful putting these things back together. That's only the case in about 3 or 4% of the ones I order though, but in 2005 and before, it was more like 0.5%.

2005 and before is about when I worked with them.

Too bad, I bet it's cut backs and lower cost workers that are the cause of the increase in sloppy work. Those issues you pointed out are typical amateur-hour.

Well Tommy Boy, If you sign up with Dell to get an account, you will become a Dell Prefferred Customer. When I purchased mine, my buddy and I bought 2 and got them for cheaper plus 0% same as cash for a year. $1500 laptop can easily be paid off in a year, even when you work at McDonalds. I also get coupons and e mails with discounts on different systems and stuff. PM your e-mail address and I'll forward them. You can try that, or if your knees get better, maybe I'll let you use my account.
