Book Discussion: The Dead

I suggested read about the first half of The Dead by James Joyce.

The Dead is the last part of the Dubliners series which consists of 14 other stories. These stories are all about the colorful people Joyce met and knew forever immortalized in his fantastic pros.

The story opens at the Morkan's sisters annual dance. Here we wait for the arrival of of the main character Gabriel. We first meet Lilly the house maid who is greeting guest and hanging up he men's coats. She is constantly bothered by the Morkan sisters as to the whereabouts of Gabriel.

When Gabriel and his wife do finally arrive we find that he is not this wonderful guest but actually an insulting and condescending man. He firsts insults his wife and then he insults Lilly, and Lily in turn rebuffs him when he further inquires about her love life.

What I found fascinating about this story is the description and detail used by Joyce. He is a firm believer in why not use 100 words when only 10 are needed.

The use of the color Brown is very predominant throughout the story.

The wonderful cast of characters we meet give us a clean picture of turn of the century Dublin.

I felt that the stopping point should be right around when gabriel gives his speech at dinner.

Others turn to discuss.

Sorry mang, I was feeling that this was a little "exclusive" cause you asked me to read some book.
