Ever recover stolen property in the city?

So it finally happened... f*cking thieves broke into my garage last night and all my tools are gone. With the bike in pieces... great.

Someone suggested hitting the Maxwell St market this weekend to see if I can find my stuff and... buy it back. Apparently people have had success with this before. I was strongly advised to not make a big deal about the stuff being hot-- just buy it and keep my mouth shut. Though if I see my toolchest(s) sitting on the ground with pricetags, it'll be tough not to punch someone in the face.

Regardless, anyone had success in similar situations?

Damn that sucks Darren, I'm sorry it happened . If you find the stuff on the street, call the cops and tell them you are waiting next to your stolen goods. Although they will ask you to prove it is your stuff. I hope you can do that some kind of way if you find it.

Wouldn't you just claim it under Homeowners ins, pay deductable, and get all new tools?

My CBR600F4 was recovered...3 1/2 years after it was stolen Still wish I would have had a chance to see it before State Farm salvaged the thing...probably had fur and a stunnah tank

man across the street had his car broken into and his tools stolen over night. around 7am or so he went to the flea market and found his tools being sold hours later. he identified them because he marked/engraved them and the police seized and arrested.

but yea shit stolen, and being sold already hour(s) later

That sucks.

Do people sell motorcycle crap at maxwell st. market? I figured all motorcycle stuff ended up on ebay or craigslist.

Dunno. All the motorcycle stuff was left behind (parts, gear, etc). General mechanic/hand tools were all taken. Easier to get rid of and harder to trace. Some of it is engraved.

..and Mig, man.. that avatar is too funny. thanks for the comic relief.

I feel your pain Darren. A few summers ago my garage was broken into. Bastards stole most of my good SK tools that my Fahja left me. Those tools were irreplaceable. I now break my back lugging tools from my house to the garage and back.

Depends on what your deductible is, whats the max amount they cover and how lenient they are with your claim. Some places need proof on what you bought, other places just suggest you provide as much proof as you can.

Or, you don't carry renter's/homeowner's insurance. IMHO, insurance in general is a scam... 10 years of not having it, one incident... it's about equal for me.

They didn't touch the bike(s). My track bike's in pieces because of me-- getting ready for Putnam. I live near the Black Rock-- Mao knows the place . From talking to my dog-walking neighbors, it must have happened between 4 and 6 am this morning.
