Scooter advice for a friend....

I didnt know where else to post, but an old friend from highschool told me she was in the market for a scooter/vespa etc to save gas. Lives up on the northside and has never been on one. Does anyone know whats popular/easy to use? I'm truly clueless.

Unless she is really stuck on getting a step through, I would suggest a SMALL motorcycle, under 200cc's. Personally, with the size of the pot holes we have, I wouldn't want to go into one large enough to eat my whole wheel.

If you can find a 60' era honda 50, you have the best "scooter" around

Wow 14 replies and no one answers the question. Good Job guys.

Genuine scooter company is based out of chicago and makes some of the best scooters on the market. Check them out online and at scooterworks on ravenswood. My personal fav is the buddy 125. Enough power for 2 people, solid, and reliable with a 2 year warranty and roadside assistance. They are also on Craigslist all the time used.

I wouldn't recommend any cheap 50cc chinese scooters that sell for next to nothing, they break and you can't find parts. Also some 50's are so slow that they can be a danger in traffic (not all 50's). They are probably fine in the city but in the burbs I wouldn't recommend. The 125 buddy will do 50+.

As with any motor vehicle safety is important. A lot of people will say that a scooter is less safe than a motorcycle, because of the small wheels, low weight, instability, etc. Which is all some what true. With the right training though anyone should be able to operate a scooter safely. They def are not toys and you have to use caution with those small wheels and disc brakes.

The best part is the low investment and low maintenance of a scooter. Plus you can park them anywhere.

For the intended purpose, scooters are a lot better than a motorcycle and much easier for a newbie.

The Yamaha Zuma is back and a great scooter. If she wants the Vespa style then I believe Honda has one that looks like a vespa.

Don't get anything less than a 125cc scooter, even that is dangerously slow. I saw a "Morphous" yesterday, a 400cc scooter from Yamaha, looked pretty slick actually.

Maybe I'll buy that for my next streetbike... I wonder how well it wheelies?

I would think that depends on how and where it is going to be used. If you live in a city and don't plan on taking it on streets rated over 35, then I'd think a Zuma would be fine. I'm not sure what a top speed of a Zuma is, 45?

I am seriously considering one of these for around town usage. I think it's perfect for us city dwellers.

Scooters are great, I used one recently to pick up a case of beer. Put the case on the floor boards, use your feet to keep it from falling off. Shorts, flipflops, no helmet or glasses, said hi to the cops as I rolled out of the 7/11.

BTW, my buddy is selling his Honda Ruckus, it's basicly brand new. If anyone is interested I'll pass along info.

fyi, anything over 125cc's requires an M class. I'd stick with the known name brand scooters. not that much more $$$ and less worry. although a co worker of mine picked up a $700 e-bay special last may and hasn't had a problem yet.
