It was billion and the oil co's are trying to distance themselves from the current prices. It is mainly rumor, speculation and safety in commodities. That being said, they are raking in the $$$.

This is also before IL and other states add their "summer blends", $5.00 for premium is not far off.

Just hit another high today, $128.. and futures are betting it will top $130. This is getting a little out of hand. Consumption is actually going down in the U.S. and reserves are up. Gas averages over $4.00 for the first time in Chicagoland today. I paid $80+ to fill up my car the other day... good time to invest in a V8.

cool...hopefully now I'll see people living closer to their jobs, more efficient vehicles on the road, and less than 90% of the cars on the road will have more than one person in them. Well maybe not.

there is talk of the fed tax being eliminated. Also, the governmenet will stop supplying the strategic reserve in August which will increase inventories. These are minor cost savings..

Thank god for a company car.

So the prices suck, but its must not be that bad if the majority of people aren't going out and buying fuel efficient cars. Switching to a alternate fuel car can double your miles and thus make it seem like gas prices drop back to $2/gallon

Don't take this the wrong way guys but honestly, I want to see how high they're gonna let this go. What is the breaking point? When does it gonna end??? How high can it go before Americans say Fuck THIS and just stop driving or something? Will this even happen? If it does I know it's gonna hurt most of us really bad but something needs to happen but I'm afraid nothing will. We'll just keep on fillin up our cars and keep on bitchin but we'll keep on payin while they keep on raising all the while making cha-ching sounds to themselves all the way to the bank.

what cars get me double the mileage of gas for the same size vehicle and also has anyone done the math of fuels used and the actual cost of a implemented alternative fuel vehiclesi have heard conflicting issues on the matter.

IE: cost of gas usage over a set amount of miles, the cost of the car and its alternative fuel= how long before i see the benifit. and WHEN that benefit arrives will the cost of that alternative fuel not also go up because of supply and demand?

other wise too will the cycle repeat its self?

It might be getting there. Bush's comments to persuade the Saudis to increase production were as such, people will move away to alternative fuels. It didn't work so much, I think they increased input only by 300k barrels a day.

Americans love their cars, the will keep the 13 MPG SUV's and just drive them less.

you'd think you'd see more bikes commuting to work, but so far I really haven't noticed an increase. the same motorcycles are parked in the lot at work every day. on really nice days there's usually a few extra cruisers.

no shit, and now you see what i mean with my other thread "shopping"? see how my craziness sometimes clicks with something else?

if we stop paying for gas we cant go to work to earn a living, if we keep shopping on line and 3rd world supplies or what ever they are coming from how ever they are doing it. the local economy goes down the drain along with the workforce.

i see a bunch of out of work people soon with no means to afford the gas to go to a job that will soon not be there. and only the strong LARGE big companies will survive, and THEN? what happens when they all standardize pricing?

the world will implode!

WAR! civil war perhaps!

I think it's already happening. Of course the higher it goes the faster the change will come. For example, a coworker of mine was looking for a place to live in the city and our office is in Itasca. Because of gas prices he moved very close instead of the city. Had gas prices been say $2.00 per gallon he probably would've lived in the city and just driven longer to work every day.

Completely agree, people will keep their cars, just drive less.

And I believe Bush was tough on the Saudis saying, "guys, you have to increase production or we're going to look for alternative fuels" or something like that. I'm sure that scared them.

There is not enough of a price difference in E85 to offset the fuel economy. I have not done the math on hybrids.

I did the math on the difference in gas prices from when I first started driving to now which is a 12yr period of time from 96-to present... (I'm driving to South Carolina in a couple of weeks and it's been on my mind)

To drive Approx 964 miles back in "96" it would of cost me approx $60.00

Now it will cost me the better part of $235.00 1 way! ILL!!! Thats all....

buying a new car is not that simple for a lot of people that are just making it now, they cant afford to make car payments even with the gas savings its no where near enough. people can do some small things to help themselves and it will cost nearly nothing. Injector cleaner, new air filter, running a lighter grade of oil if possible, changing spark plugs, O2 sensor, and even running your tires at the recommended PSI can help(you can run a couple PSI over but I dont recommend doing this as there arent huge benefits to be seen and unless you know what youre doing with tire pressure adjustments and their effects you can end up with blown tires.

all these small things add up to save gas especially your tires, check the PSI each time you fill up, it can be done while the pump runs and youre just standing there. being low at the tires really hurts your milage.

I think he is just doing that to make it look like he cares. Half his cabinet has ties to big oil. I think people who work in the city should use public transportation. The CTA (Blue Line at least) is much better than it was a year ago. I can get from my house to UIC (right outside the Loop) in 1 hour if I catch my bus. It costs ~$4 for both ways and the trip is 18 miles, so it would be 36 miles a day. If I take my bike (~30 MPG) then I would end up paying $4.50 a day in gas + parking and I would have to deal with rush hour traffic on the return trip.
