Crime Rate

Is it me or is the slumping economy a direct correlation to the rising crime rates?

All I see on the news nowadays is someone getting shot, kids getting killed, kids getting kidnapped... it's 80 percent of all headline news on sites like CBS2Chicago and NBC 5. I don't think we've had this much crime since the late 90s and early 00s.

I think i'm going to have to start packing heat when leaving the house.

Dude, this is the primary reason I don't watch local news. The media has nothing to provide that is useful to us. Sometimes, about 25 minutes into their regular programmed news cast, they tell us about how some kids visited an old folks home.

Media sucks.

I wouldn't form opinions based on what's on the "news". Their goal is to get viewers so they can make money with their commercials not to report the actual news.

I doubt that its the economy, I'd blame it more on the lax legal system that creates a hotel system for criminals rather than a system of punishment.

I just had this exact same discussion on Monday when I heard the news report that 30plus people had been shot over the weekend. I have to agree 100% with your statement.

This is probably true... we get a few weeks of good weather and people go out with there gats and start shooting at folks. Pretty sad.

I bring it up because I was at my softball game in the city (by montrose and marine drive -- Clarendon Park) and we had at least 5 squad cars drive into the park and ask if everything was OK. The officer explained that there was some gang shootings earliar on in the day.

That brings up another question.. is gang activity increasing as well? Growing up in the city, I was exposed to alot of that craziness but it seemed to die down once I got into college.

Try BBC... A few weeks ago, they reported on tent cities going up in California from foreclosures and layoffs. They report what goes on without fear of sponsorship or political problems from our businesses and leaders. Of course, it's brit, so they do like to get a few digs in on us. But still, I don't remember tent cities in any news cast, local or world news from your CBS, NBC, FOX, etc.

Can't imagine why they wouldn't want to show your everyday viewer that -guess it isn't quite as interesting as kids getting shot...

It's the weather. Most of the shootings were gang related. The gangbangers are out patrolling their hoods in force again.

But I'm glad to see our gun ban working. Thanks Daley.

One of my closest friends and a very close cousin are CPD. The fact is, according to them, that crime, including violent crime is down in Chicago.
It's interesting to talk to them, they don't know each other, yet they say the same unflattering things about the news media.
The media sensationalizes everything. According to my friend that is a detective, there were more shootings on the first warm weekend of April than there were last weekend, but last weekend got sensationalized because the media is pushing a political agenda to get more unnecessary gun control passed!
Gang activity and violence over turf is way up overall because "gentrification" of neighborhoods that were long time turf of established gangs is forcing gangbangers to move into areas that are the turf of other gangs.

As to the "news" that the economy is sagging...we are being bold faced lied to...also the news media driving a political agenda...the word recession keeps coming up, but there is no way we are in a recession. A recession is strictly defined as three full quarters of negative growth. While we have had growth slow, especially in housing (that was caused by the banks because they got greedy), we haven't even had 1 quarter of negative growth yet!
You want to help the economy? Pay off your credit card debt, and take your tax refund and your "stimulous" check and buy something that's AMERICAN made! Also...contact Congress and the White house and urge them to support a modest increase in interest rates and other actions that will shore up the world value of the dollar!
Stepping off soap box now.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be used for sources of news. I just wouldn't look at them for trends like crime rates. You're basing your opinion off of what some producer thinks will get good ratings rather than solid metrics. There are sites that you can get data from. http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/ is one of those sites although I can't vouch for their accuracy.

I have a couple buddies on the CPD and they seem to think that the new commissioner is making changes that doesn't benefit the officers. Officers don't want to get fired so they take less chances and won't really pursue a situation if there is a chance it may get to deep. They don't want to get accused of being to rough on criminals, etc.

One of the news channels reported that more felons are being accepted into the military than ever before because of the war. While there are sure to be exceptions, some felons (possible gang members) are going to be coming back with military training and hitting the streets rejoining their gangs. That's a scary thought.

My friends are telling me the same thing...most cops I know are VERY anti Daley. They blame his "soft " approach to gangs etc. and his lack of backing the police when getting tough where necessary as why the gangs are so entrenched and strong. It's one thing to come down on a bad cop...it's still another to make all cops shy about doing what is necessary to do a very tough job. One of my friends father was a cop under Richie's dad and says the old man is spinning in his grave over the way Richie treats the city workers and has castrated the police departmant!

10:25 - 10:26 human interest story
10:26 - 10:30 weather and sports

At least if they are trained by the military they will learn how to shoot, and would be less likely to hit innocent bystanders.

That's a shame. I understand being tough on bad cops that overstep their authority (the Anthony Abbate guy that beat up the bartender) but most officers are trying to do a good job and make a difference. I agree with my friend, I wouldn't want to get fired over some criminal that has nothing to lose or worse, get killed for it.
