What do you look for in a daily commuter?

What do you all look for, or what WOULD you look for, if you were going to buy a bike strictly for commuting?

Some things I would maybe consider:
  • Fuel economy
  • Reliability
  • Storage (bike bags and such)
  • Good in all sorts of weather

Anything else?

+1, in this area, a bike makes a poor commuter.

People aren't used to having bikes all around them like Californians are and you only get a few months a year for a riding season. Want a daily commuter that'll save money and still get you some open air? Geo Metro Convertible, Mazda Miata or Honda Civic with the top ripped off.

Paul is constantly trying to find the best road bike. One day, he will wake up and realize that he already owns a VFR.

Give up the search. There is no better road bike ever made. Period.

Just look in your garage, narrow it down from 20 to 2 then whichever of the 2 keys you find first, commute

Still buying bikes homie?

For me, the VFR is perfect, especially once the GPS goes on it. I added the Givi trunk and it's now just what I want for a daily rider.

This is not for me, however. I am done buying bikes this year. I am helping someone at work (in our LA office) that wants to get something. He rides an 06 CBR1000RR, but he wants to add a bike specifically for commuting. In Cali, it would work great - especially when there is a lot of traffic. he doesn't want a VFR though - I already triend that. he wants to spend maybe 5-6k on a cruiser type but has no idea what to look for in a commuter.

I would look for a psychiatrist and more powerful meds Commuting on a bike in Chicagolalaland is for the suicidal or for the very, very desperate people who a) the motorcycle is their ONLY method of transportation b) they are income challenged who can't afford anything but a rat bike. Now I'll take that all back if you have found a route from home to work that are all twisties, with little or no cagers trying to kill you, while shaving, applying make up, get dressed, brushing their teeth, read the paper, talking on their cell phones or any other distractions while driving.

Lane Split the 405 on a FZ6 all day - I was going to say Motard cuz he'll never get over 50 in rush hour but with the MX bars and side mirrors, he may get some bloody knuckles

a little early for you 2 to be drinking heavily....VFR You have to BUY luggage for it and a new saddle, find a leftover ST3 like Blarney did and rule the roads

The 8 bikes you have now isnt cutting anymore Are you feeling you need to get another just for commuting?

Honestly fuel isnt a issue its way cheaper then the car in the end. Storage to go to work Bah dont need it. Comfort IMO

I think a Y2K Turbine bike would be best.

The sound will get others attention. The exhaust will melt the cars that follow too close. And it has plenty of speed to leave undesirables far behind.

If not an FZ6 or SV, I'd go for something more like a dual-sport or perhaps a larger motard....I'm not sure what the luggage options would be though.

Anyway, in case your co-workers cares, here are a couple FZ6s for sale in SoCal:
