WTF happened here?

Passed this 'thing' on a flatbed on the way home today. This is probably the only angle in which that mess actually resembles an automobile. From the other side of the tow truck it looked like a pile of mangled metal. I guess a meteor landed on it.

I think it might be an older Ford Explorer, but who knows.

Could have been this: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?sec...cal&id=6138880

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A woman was killed in a high-speed crash in west suburban Villa Park late Monday night.
Witnesses say police were following a Dodge Magnum down Plymouth near Douglas when the speeding driver somehow lost control and slammed into a tree.
The force of the impact caused the SUV to wrap around the trunk of the tree. The woman behind the wheel of the SUV was killed.
No one else was hurt but the crash could be heard throughout the subdivision.
Police have not yet released the identity of the driver.
It's unclear why officers were pursuing.

It very well could be, I saw the wrecker westbound on Rt.14 after it turned off of Rt.59 in Barrington, easily could have come from 68/59.
