logical or illogical to deal making on phone

I thinking about buying a car, well the problem comes down to the dealer is pretty far from where i'm located and I won't be able to make it down after work because it would be closed. So i'm wondering would it be logical or even doable to make a deal on the phone. Like bringing the car price down etc... I've never negociated (sp?) car prices so is there a way to go about this? lowball offer? ask the dealer if the price is firm etc...

or is it better for me to just go to the dealer and do it in person?

I mean if I get the price i'm willing to drive down to fill out the loan apps and all the other good stuff, just not sure if I can make it down to the dealer in time before it closes.

Thanks for any advice.

As someone who used to sell cars, I will tell you that a salesmen will never do a deal over the phone. If he gives you a price over the phone, chances are its a bullshit price just to get you in the door.

I wouldn't do it. The internet pics might look great, but there could be problems with the car you can't see. Or there could be issues mechanically you wouldn't know unless you test drove it.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Yea I agree. It looks so nice, but pictures do lie, so I will go in and take a look at it.

Buying used, no way.

I bought our truck over the phone. I had viewed it previously though, aslo it was new. Called the saleman, told him the price I was willing to pay, and that I'd be in Friday to pick it up. He told me the price was to low, but would present it to his manager. Must have caught the manager on a good day, because about a hour later he called back and asked what time to expect me Friday.

As with any negotiation confidence is key.

Goodluck.

No doubt it will be harder to price shop used vehicles. Run a carfax if you can. Some dealers will still quote OTD pricing on used vehicles over the phone. Especially if they know you're from out of town. If the salesmen want to play games, get ahold of the sales manager directly. No point paying someone's commish if they are working against you...
