Uhhh..GNR were pretty commercial and a semi hair band (just check out their old drummer before Matt Sorenson)...Metallica was not a hairband. They're just sellouts..

I would have to say that the term "hair band" has been given a little too broad a definition.

Metallica, definately not a hair band.

Neither is GNR

Poison, definately is

Hair band is more glam-rock, Metallica is more heavy metal.

Poison, Ratt, Winger, Keel, Autograph...those are definately hair bands

AKA: Posers in the term of the time. Metallica destroys that stereotype but they still sold out post Justice.

Glam should of been the term used. Because yes, Metallica was a "hair" band just not a poser "glam" band.

Poser bands like:

Enuff Z'nuff
Cinderella
Skid Row
Ratt
Poison
L.A. Guns
Warrant
White Lion
Slaughter
Pretty Boy Floyd
Britny Fox
Wrathchild
Madam X
Nelson

Vs. "hair" bands"

Iron Maiden
Van Halen
Dream Theater
Metallica
Guns and roses - could go either way
Savatage
Pantera
Queensr˙che
W.A.S.P.
Celtic Frost
Slayer
Badlands
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Dokken
Dio

Just to name a few ETC...ETC

Anything that plays on Sirius, "hairnation" makes my list. That includes just about every band mentioned in this thread. Metallica is on the cusp, I agree. They really did not sell out until the early 90's I believe. GNR is or was a hair band when they frist came out..

Just because they have hair doesnt make them a hair band. Hair band and glam band are the same thing.

Maybe to you and I. There are plenty of people who don't know the difference.

I never called them hair or glam.... just poser!

I listened to the hardcore metal back in the day. While most of the posers where cruzin Archer ave listening to Bobby brown I was rocking Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, some old school Sabbath & Zepp and the occasional two live crew as nasty as they wanna be.

the only thing Metallica was on the cusp of was punk/metal or as they used to call it metalcore.(think Anthrax, Celtic Frost, Death Angel). Hair/Glam is catagorized by musical style more than anything, pop-metal ballad style. Bon Jovi and Night Ranger fall into that category as on the cusp but certainly not Metallica.

Axl Rose is too much of an ugly motherfucker to be glam.

Wiki lists GNR as glam/punk. I would of pasted the entire article but it was very long.

Wiki is hardly a credible source. If you think GnR was glam then you didn't listen to music in the 80s.

I classify my music and for the sake of my sanity I'm going to enlighten you: GnR is not a hair band and they did not produce glam rock. Hell even Bon Jovi didn't create glam rock, though they were a hell of a lot closer than GnR.

I purposely did not include Van Halen or GNR on my list because I don't consider them hair bands. Then again, even Bon Jovi is marginal to me...i shoulda put Poison instead. I have the original "Open Up and Say Ahhhhh" tape, before they censored the cover. ooooh
