camping

I am looking for a camp site within a 3 hr drive

-somewhere where 4-6 people can just hang, grill, drink, fish

I am finding a lot of family places that look more like resorts with waterslides than camping

Does anybody recommend a place that is more geared towards adults?

Governor Dodge State Park in Dodgeville Wisconsin. 2 connected lakes that are full of fish, especially panfish but not limited to panfish. Boat rental, several camping areas that are secluded enough to provide a reasonable amount of privacy and a nice surrounding area with some fun attractions that aren't overrun with kids, like the House on the Rock, the Don Q Inn, with a great bar and restaurant etc. All about 40 miles west of Madison.

Right across the road from the entrance is the Rock River Riders MC clubgrounds. If you happen to be there on June 15 or July 20 they are having their hillclimb events. Hillclimbs are too much fun to watch!

Clinton Lake.....Clinton, IL

It's just around 2 hrs from Monee, IL so prolly 3 from you. Fun, newer, and nice campground on the North end. The only fault is some of the shade trees are a little young, but show up before the weekend or something and get the sites with the good trees.

Any of these places that you guys posted be safe for bringing kids. I want to camp with hte kids and maybe do a little fishing and hiking. My kids are 6 and 10 so i don't want to hang out at a place that is filled with drunk and routy people. More family orientated.

I just went to Rock Cut State Park a week or two ago. 45 minutes away from the NW burbs. If you are into hiking or biking, this is a fun stop. We got loaded as usual at night and nobody complained there is a lot of distense in some areas between campers.

The best primitive style campsite I've been to yet. Just about as private as you can get due to the ample trees and plants between sites. Not much of a place for fising but there's a private lake nearby that I think you can pay to fish at. The river in the park is useless for fishing. Also they don't allow alcohol but just don't be stupid and take your stuff in inconspicuous containers. The rangers leave you be as long as you're not acting retarded. There are no showers so the longest I've stayed was 2 nights. I just wash up late at night at the ground pump. There's also usually plenty of space because of the lack of showers.

This is also another excellent place. Not as private as Apple River Canyon but they have everything you need on site. This place would be great for you and your kids Steve and it's not that far away either. They have everything from gigantic mobile home sites to primitive sites. They even have a log cabin you can reserve ahead of time that stands by itself on a little cove of the lake. Very beautiful.

This place is close and it's HUGE. Only problem is that it's usually packed during peak weekends since it's so close to Chicago.

+1 on this area. Devils lake is awesome.
They have some really good singletrack mountain bike paths if yer into that.
You can rent canoe's all night, and party your ass off in the middle of the lake.
Though, be warned, if you get high be very careful. The rangers love nothing more than arresting young people smoking pot and high on mushrooms.

Going to jail on mushrooms is not cool.
