this is an interesting concept. It's carbon negative, but it is energy negative? Does the amount of energy required to make the bugs / sustain the bugs / exceed the energy the bugs create?

Its a fascinating idea and in it's infancy you know that it will only grow more and more efficient.

Hmmm, very interesting idea. The one problem...

Hippies have to drive their gas-guzzling VW Micro-buses too! Gotta get to Whole Foods somehow!

this isn't a bug, it's a bacteria. If it can actually deliver on it's promise to create a fuel from easily renewable resources that can be created in resonable quantites for less then we currently pay, it will get traction. The question is if it can actually deliver. Carbon negative is great, but remember with oil for every unit of energy put into the process we pull 50 out.

time will tell, and it's not fair to be synical on the promise of oil price regulation through technology. Gas will never be $1 a gallon again, but if we can get stability by creating artificial supply, we can ease our dependance on foriegn oil and increase supply to an extent to relieve the prices that are inflated due to precieved future demand.

Does anyone know how long this process takes? The energy ratio is helped by the fact that a living organism is doing the processing, but what will this product truly yield? If it yields true crude oil (which I doubt) it will still sell at the global price per barrel in spite of the fact of how much it costs to produce. While the $50 per barrel cost sounds nice...factor this into your excitement: it costs Saudi Arabia $0.40 to produce. Most other wells are considered unprofitable if the oil cant be pumped for under $13 a barrel. On a positive note, this is a start. If we have people who can make bacteria poop out oil then who knows whats next!

agreed, $50 doesn't take into account transportation or any other costs involved.

but if we can make bacteria poop oil, the sky's the limit

Insulin is actually made in a similar way using bacteria.
