End of an era in Chicago

After however many years, Chicago finally decided to get in step with the rest of the world and has downsized the familiar Chicago "coin" to an aluminum dogtag. The new wheel tax tag is much easier to fit onto the license plate frame than the old one, and it's just a wonder why they didn't do this sooner.

This is another reason I live out with the cows and horses ... no pointless vehicle tags here.

I never buy them but might have to soon if they start writing people tickets for that shit when the bike is parked. The city has started to do revenue boosters like that. I got a ticket for no front plate on my car when they wrote me for an expired meter. They'll write your car for no city sticker too...why not a bike.

Interestingly enough a long time ago I had to go to court in Berwyn to fight a B.S. ticket for not displaying a front plate on my car. This was after a Cicero cop told me to replace my stolen rear plate with my front plate until I got a replacement plate.

And the Berwyn judge there told the cop that there was no law requiring a front plate, and threw the ticket out.

So no ... it's a crock of poop ... you don't need a front plate. In fact, I don't know why the state just doesn't save itself a buttload of money by not stamping 2 plates. Simple math here, but they could save 50% in materials and time.

Now people will have to replace the one they bought 10 years ago and have kept on.

They will. It's an easy $120 of revenue (plus late fees when you buy the thing) and they have fleets of people out on the streets just waiting to get it from you--and they'll probably get you for another $25 for not parking perpendicular to the curb, while they're at it.
