iPod vs. Zune

So I received a 4GB Zune as a gift and have been palying around with it lately. I currently have a 5G Video iPod 30GB that I sync with iTunes on my desktop that has served me well, and holds about 1/4 of my music library.

I'm using the Zune with my laptop (after peeling off all the Apple software) and I have to say the Zune application is much slicker than iTunes. Much less software, iTunes installs multiple services, drivers, and helper apps. Connecting/disconnecting the device is more seamless than iTunes, especially with syncing multiple changes without requiring user intervention. The online store works with Microsoft Points and the 'social' stuff integrates with XBox Live friends as well. Kind of neat how all of it's tied together.

I like the controls on the 2.0 version of the Zune more than the iPod's touch-wheel as well, and the interface is easier to navigate.

I'd heard that the original Zune was quite bad, but I'm quite impressed with the new version.

Anyone have both devices?

i have seen the zune but not used it personally. in my opinion it really comes down to which one intergrates into your life easily. for me the ipod did becuase it held all my music now the iphone does cuz it gives me enuff music and phone / internet access. i have no doubt the zune is slick i think it was just a day late ya know.

I have a 30 gig Zune. My son talked me into it a year ago. I like it more than my old I-pod nano. Forgetting about the software (which I do like more) it holds every last CD I own with room to spare and has HUGE battery life. It is a little more to carry around, but easily slips into any pocket. It was also pretty cheap.

It was definitely later in coming to the game, but I think it's more about apples advertising and the general public lack of knowledge... Most people think all mp3's players are ipod's. Take the advertising for the new Iphone for example..."what is 3g" 3g is what I had on my samsung a920 phone in 2004.

i can deffinetly agree with that point. they have really hit the advertising road with a vengence.

Oh yeah. I recently just found out that you can plug the Zune to the Xbox and play tunes while gaming.

I'm waiting for iHead.

With iHead, my ear will flip up to reveal a USB port, plug my head into my PC using any standard USB cable, sync, and then all I will have to do is think of the song I want to hear, then bam, it will start playing.

Randal: [to Dante] Would you grow up!
Becky: [to Dante] OK, I'm only telling you this because we're friends, but sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it's forgivable to go ass-to-mouth.
Randal: [chuckling] Ha! I knew it.

The Zune works great with the new Ford Sync system in their cars - even better than the iPod. I may consider it just on that basis alone...

????

I haz the Zune 80GB 2.0. I got it last X-mas from Brianne's family. I don't like MP3 players, but I love my Zune. It really surprised me with how well the interface works and how good it sounds. The premium headphones that came with the 80GB are great as well, though I may upgrade in the future.

The only thing I don't care for, is that I don't know of any car stereo that will control the Zune the way some can completely control the iPod.

Paul, what's this about the Ford Sync system? I've never heard of it...but then again, I'd never buy a Ford.

Did a lot of research on this since the FM tuner i haz sounds horrible. Only thing i found was this:

http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_catal...blitz_aux.html

It's cool cause it shows the music info on the DIS in the Audi's.

Ford is touting their new top-end sound system in their cars. It's a comprehensive control center for all of your media - voice activated and everything. It allows you to connect USB devices (like Zune, iPod...) to the car and control it from the navigation screen. It's in my car and available in most of the newer Fords coming out as an option. Microsoft helped develop it so it's very conducive to the Zune, even though the iPod controls are good too...

Well hopefully some good aftermarket head units (or future Scions) will include this as well. I'm dissapointed that I can't connect my Zune to my Scion like I could an iPod.

Yessir. You'll prolly just get dizzy though... Sound quality in the cage is ok via the am/fm transmitter, not so clear due to size of screen..

No, but #1 and #2 sons do on theirs. I think it's more for cool factor than any real use.

My workout facility has TVs that broadcast sound on fm frequencies. I prefer my zune in that instance over my IPod as the Zune has the built-in radio.
