Paulding Light

has anyone else ever been to the UP and seen this?
I was there twice last weekend - very interesting to see and watch
Goes from BRIGHT white to soft white to red and fades in and out and turns on and off etc etc

lots of theories
I wouldnt have believed it even existed if I hadnt seen it.
Theres some pictures and vidoes in these links.
The old rail worker theory is the most interesting.
Ive become obsessed with this and will go back when Im up there next time

I've tried to check it out a few times on trips near Watersmeet but haven't seen it. Definitely a bizarre phenomenon! I think Mythbusters even did an episode on it.

A few locals I've talked with are pretty confident it's car lights though...

its definately not car lights
people have set up high power telescopes at night to see what the source is
its there every clear night and some nights that are foggy misty etc
I talked to a lady that was there last winter when it was -26 degrees - I think not that theres somebody out there every night, all night 365 days a year

its higher in the air at times-sometimes on the ground - closer some nights(some told me as close as 50 yards)

20/20 Ripleys and others have been there leaving without an explanation. And its not the northern lights

all of your theories have been debunked

I've been in the right spot but had crappy luck with weather. Both times it's been mid winter & overcast with lake effect snows building. I'd like to see it!

I'm not convinced the locals were right but there was some substance to what they explained.

They claim the lights did not start getting noticed until after construction of an intersection the same direction as the lights appear to originate from. They also claim to have "experimented" with that intersection in attemps to create this & say they can duplicate it. Could all be BS for all I know. I'm definitely no expert!

Can anybody post a good overhead map of the viewing spot that shows what's downline from there?

Dang, I was JUST up there last Wed night, driving very late at night to Houghton on an ultra clear night. I have never seen it and have always wanted to see it myself. Why didnt you post this last week to remind me

Is it true that as you walk toward it goes farther away.

That certainly makes things interesting! Next CLSB snowmobile trip, we're gonna hafta go there again. That's awesome that nobody's found an explanation yet.

sometimes
but when I turned on the road-a half mile from where you park- it was bright as a headlight and swinging left to right like a lantern being swung in someones hand. I didnt know that was it at first until something clicked in my head. I thought it was a car coming at me-it was that bright

there were about 20 people there each night-everyone with their own theory

It was a red light most of the time on the first night and then almost all white on the 2nd night

Ripleys is still offering 100k to anyone that can explain it
You dont think people are trying to figure it out? for 50+ years????

[email protected] years ago my buddy and I used to make that "light" go on and off for the tourists. We'd park one car over the hill on Rt45 and one at the "viewing spot". We both had CB's and I'd call for him to either hit the lights or step on the brakes. All the tourists would go Oooooooo. A bunch of us that were in the know would sit around pounding beers down and laugh our asses off.

Nothing to explain. It's a car going over the hill about a couple of miles north on Rt45 then turning off. The white light is when they are heading toward you and the red light is when they are hitting the brakes and heading away from you. I had a place up there for many, many, many years. My family has been up there since before the "BIG ONE", (WWII).

But then again, ya never know.
