Why so many swimming styles as events?

Seriously, doesnt it seem odd? Basically they're saying, "yeah we know these other strokes arent as fast or as effecient but lets go ahead and make it a separate medal-able category". Does that seem kind of odd to anyone else? That's like creating a separate medal-able event for the 100m running backwards sprint, don't forget the sideways shuffle, and walking on your hands.

Am I nuts?

You make a good point with the track and field analogy. Asking "why" about olympic events will get you nowhere though.

My name is JB, people call me JB

Kruz your analogies are not comparable. having a javelin event where you throw it two handed would be a better comparison. And high jump and pole vault are so different it's not even funny.

The real question is why is "Olympic" women's softball governed by a set or rules desgined for 10 year girls?

-Miniature diamond
-No leadoffs
-Pitcher's circle
-Slap hitters are just ghey

Sure they are just greater variations of the same basic athletic motion.

I was only half listening the other night when it was on, but I think they said softball plays 7 innings. If they go into extra innings, they automatically start with a runner on 2nd base to promote scoring and getting the game over with.

I use to swim competitively. I guess the only thing I can give you is that each stroke uses a completely different group of muscles, and although I haven't looked at any times yet, my guess is that free comes in the quickest, but the other strokes are also pretty damn fast. It's technique that will make you the fastest out of your competitors, and each athlete probably has their own specialty. Maybe think of it more like diving?

I think you hit it on the head right there...mutliple styles for to even out the overall competition swimming. Sounds a bit archaic to me given how specialized athletes are today.

lol...I'll start watching the Olympics if they have Olympic Pole Dancing as part of the competition (Women's beach volleyball will have to do for now )

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

the same argument could be made for all the combat sports - boxing, 2 different kinds of wrestling, judo, taekwondo.

just replace all those with MMA

Swimming must have some redundant disciplines to be able to get that many gold medals. Imagine Rossi winning the gold in Olympic GP racing, Greco-Roman wrestling, speed knitting, curling, and the high jump all at once. It would be impossible. But if they had a holeshot category, fastest lap, fastest two laps, fastest race, highest top speed, quickest braking, greatest lean angle, longest wheelie, and closest pass he might be able to get a gold in all of them. Anyways it's all about the Speedo speed suits anyways. But really the more events Natalie Coughlan is in the better.

Just get back to the basics....the only reason they have men's synchronized diving is to attract gay men and women to watch the games....sorry it's not a sport! Yes, yes, I know it's difficult and beautiful and whatever lame ass reason you have to say that it is a sport but it's not anymore a sport as couples dance skating....totally lame! True....but trap shooting, mountain and bmx biking are cool, not lame ass games, remember Rick's definition of a game is something you play with a ball, where as in a sport, there is a distinct possibility of grave bodily injury or death

You can get seriously hurt diving . You can hit your head on the board, or land on your stomach if you screw up the angle of entry on the dive, ouch.
