How Do Olympians Make Money

To be able to train as often and as hard as most Olympians do, how do they get financially compensated? I suppose that there is the option for endorsement deals for the high profile athletes, but what about the average Olympian who has to spend 30-40 hours a week training?

Name of the game is sacrifice and risk. You forego a lot to be at the top of any sport usually including family, fun, friends, income, etc. Until you make it to the top you are pretty poor.

It must take a lot of commitment and dedication to want to be an Olympic athlete. You have to really love the sport you are in to be able to do it for little to no pay. Its not like a track & field star can go back to being a proffessional track & field athlete after the Olympics are over.

I could see that up until the Olympic trials. Once you make the team, dont they send a majority of the athletes to the Olympic Training Center in Colorodo Springs? Trials are at least 9-12 months prior to the Olympic games. Do they just pay their bills and give them an "allowance"?

back in the day before home depot stopped caring they used to be one of the primary employeers for olympians and olymipc hopefuls (for the normal olympics and special olympics). They used to make a big deal about it and how they cared enough to help make those individuals scheduals so they could train as hard as they do.

Used to be featured in their commericals.

Then home depot got a new CEO who didn't care, and they quietly pushed that program out the back door and started hiring under qualified kids, sat then infront of a training computer program then threw them out on the sales floor with little to know product knowlage and home improvement knowlage...they've been on the fast track to the bottom of the barrel ever since.

llama spit - that is all.

I have a friend that's going to make the winter Olympics this year. Some of us have been playing COD4 with him. That's exactly it though, he's sacrificing family/salary to train. After you make it you may get some endorsements that make it worth while and you can demand big money to train others in your sport. But it's a big chance.

if you are an actual olympian they do meet and greets and public events. they do much more exspecially around the olympic time, and alot of them plan there life around the olympics cuz thats when the $$ starts to come in again.

its funny you ask this cuz i asked my wife this the other day and she told me last night about what she was able to find out.

Willard: When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle.

They used to do the same for vets, at least that's what I was told at ACAP. The way they made it sound, all I had to do was walk in with my DD214 and they would toss a job at me. Not so much. After submitting my app to a few different stores, I was pretty much told to stop applying.

I was just curous. I was part of the US Olympic Team trials back in 2000 when Tae Kwon Do first became an Olympic sport. I didnt make it all the way through, but I got pretty far. Up until that point, it was a "pay your own way" deal. I actually ended up fighting Mark Lopez, who is one of the US Olympic members this year, but we never had the chance to talk further. I also had dinner w/ his brother, 2 time Olympic Gold medalist Steve Lopez, but this was far from what our conversations revolved around. Unfortunately, that was 8 years ago and we havent talked much since. Got the burning question, but not sure how to answer it...

The 1st place purse for the HiVee Triathalon in July which was the US Olympic qualifying event was $100,000. 3rd place was $25,000.

I guess you just have to be really damn good at it.

You would have to. Between coaches, personal trainers, nutritionists, etc. there is almost no way an average Joe could do this. You know how every year you hear of some construction worker or insurance agent that gets called back into the NFL? I would like to see someone do something similar w/ the Olympics...
