Some dude I eat lunch with won a lottery!

So I go to lunch with my usual boys on Friday. One of the guys has a big smile on his face. He is getting 2.5 million, after taxes, from a lottery winning about a month ago!! Apparently he knew about this a while and never told anyone! I wouldn't be able to contain myself if I won.

So, if you got 2.5 mil, tax free, what would you do with it? I always play this game, now someone I know actually gets to live it. he is going to keep working, he is a managing director/partner at a nice law firm. Half is going to be put away for his kids schooling and retirement. The other half will go toward their home and desire to get a vacation spot somewhere as well as a startup fund for his wife's consulting business she wants to start.

Does he want to adopt me?

Pay off everything I owe, invest the rest, and retire young. Working is for suckers.

I agree. That would be my secret to the grave. But it might be a little hard to explain a brand new R6, and a new Tesla Roadster sitting in the driveway.
But really, I would put it all in my mutual fund and IRA and would try to live a normal life. Stay in school and try to become a famous electrical engineer.

500k invested is not enough to live off the interest. Unless by .5 you meant half of the total 2.5 in which case you're in better shape.

i'd not quit working. I hate being idle or having nothing to do. granted with 2.5M you can find plenty to do, but living a lifestyle like that won't last forever. plus I like what I do (for the most part). And keeping it a secret is a good idea. if he hasn't collected yet, he should not be keeping that money in his name specifically or claiming it as his. start an LLC or something and make that the winner/owner of the money. lots of strange weirdos claim to be your long lost relative and such if the name is publicized.

when the 1mil house has 25k+ taxes per year your projected 75k gets wittled down a lot.

Assuming I have NO cash right now? You are right. I am including my current savings and investments. If I didn't have that, I would buy a cheaper house and put more away. the toys and vacation amounts stay, however
