Laptop and cell phone recommendations

Well it looks like my fly date to Bahrain is September 27th. Before I go I need to pick up a new laptop and cell phone. I wanted to get recommendations for both.

For a laptop I need something that will have decent battery life and be able to burn discs and have a decent sized HD. I will be using it for everything, school, music, pics, movies, browsing. I would like something with a built in webcam, mic and speakaers. None of my household goods are coming with me at this point. I would like to keep it under $1000. Playing games is not an issue with me.

As far as phones, I was looking at a GSM blackberry. I'm not sure which model to go with. I have considered GPS as an option, but what is the availability of mapping in some foreign countries? I will be moving around the Middle East and Eastern Europe and want to make sure my leash works wherever I go.

Help?

Laptop for under 1K. I'd recommend a Sony Viao w/ Itel dual core. If you need it down to certain specs I can look some up.
As for cell phone, go w/ blackberry Curve or 8800 series.

laptop--find a used mac book(pro) on ebay/craigslist

if you get a cell phone that uses google maps (like the iphone does) then it won't matter where you are as you'll always have access to the maps provided you have cell signal. an unlocked first gen iphone wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Blackberry 8830 with the worldwide option. Get a Sprint one, $60 a month for 500 minutes and blackberry service.

Laptop, get a smaller screen and a 9cell battery and your will be loving your self. Don't even consider a 17 inch.

Not sure what the worldoption is, but I'd make sure it covers where you're going.

The two bands for Bahrain are 900 and 1800. It seems to be the same for most of Europe.

I need to look at the batteries on laptops I think.

As far as screen size I was looking at 15". I can always get an external HD if need be. What do you think would be a good size to start with for internal memory, 160 gig?

I had a vaio laptop before and I beat the hell out of it in Iraq and it held up. It was with me when my truck was almost blown out from under me and it kept ticking. I'm not opposed to refurbed laptops either. I've had good experiences thus far.

I have a 15". 17" laptop is too big to be nicely portable, imo.
