anyone ever been to Guadalajara, Mexico?

I'm getting sent to Guadalajara for work for six days...
Actually there is very little work to be done, so I'll have plenty of time to roam around. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I already know about the water.

Is it safe to drink coffee in Mexico?
I think I can survive on coffee and Corona's for my time there.

i lived in that area for 2 years long ago.

go to plaza del sol "the biggest indoor market i have ever seen" go DT see the churches and some of historic buildings. you can take a 45 minute drive to chapala for the tourist/living area for some of the rich white people that retire down there. also going out at night around the DT area, the side vendors with food, tacos, the fresh fruit carts and the seafood carts OMG its a eatery heaven.

alot of times around there is festivals going on with dance and carnivals etc.

there is so much to do and see its a wonderful place.

it also has a bad side, so stay away from bad areas, dont carry much cash, most watch out for the fucken bus's they will run your ass over.

dont know if you speak Spanish or taking someone with you. but learn some. also dont fall for any shit or scams just go do what your gonna do and have fun most of all, dont dress like you got a shit load of money. "blend in"

have fun.

Thanks Ody... thats exactly what I wanted to hear.

My only concern right now is, do I take my digital SLR out at night?

sure, why not. crime is crime. i am sure your smart enough to stay around people "watch pick pockets" and don't go down empty dark streets. "common sense shit unless your looking for whores or trouble"

its a VERY diverse area, rich walking among the poor, and the dirt poor. the most common thing is the common people and beggars from here and there "usually around the malls and banks"

also too nice little plan rides to panama or costa rica is a few hours away of you wanna see some real shit in the jungles.

also too lard is a big part of there cooking down there for there oils. "if your not use to it, start eating some now in your cooking "crisco" also there is many high dining areas that cater to fine dining but really the local food is the best.

FRESH EVERYTHING! and the fucken tortillas de masa made by hand omg, morning menudo, carnitas and tamales at night around the churches, most of all some of the women, OMG. that place was my retreat from some of the shit i had to do for other stuff.

when it comes to seafood "just make sure you ask around for the most "piscado fresco" but there was an area i forget where but i can try to remember if your big time into seafood there was a sector that was known for FRESH daily seafood raw brought in from the ocean within hours.

there shrimp cocktails are FAR from ours!

btw do you speak spanish? or any part mexican?

No.. I don’t speak Spanish, so that might be problematic.

Man you are making me hungry!
Here I was a little bummed about being sent to Guadalajara.. but I’m totally down for some good fresh food!
I read about the Churches and so that’s why I wanna bust out the big camera to get some shots it.

I’ll be sure to take some pics for you.. just hope I don’t end up in a Mexican Jail for taking pics of the Senorita’s

Did you want me to bring anything back for you?
(That would be legal to bring back!)

Wow! That's great that they're sending you to such a nice city!

I have family in a couple of the "colonias" in Guadalajara and can assure you there is plenty of truth to what Ody stated.

1. The women are beautiful. They have the most lovely doe eyes (ojos tapatios) and fabulous curves.

2. The food is superb. I have an aunt that cooks for a living, so let me know what area you'll be in and I can make some arrangements for you.

3. The area is well suited to accomodate your needs. This is not a small town on the outskirts, you will find whatever you may need.

4. The culture is very varied, corp. executives, students, etc. My nephew studied in San Diego and is back in Gua. to start his college education, he is completely fluent, and if you'd like I can ask him to show you around.

5. The cathedrals and market places are something to be seen, please take photos and pm if possible. Another of my aunts has a dance group (danzantes) that perform at different plazas and events, please let me know when you're going and I can try and get you more details. The costumes, music, and lovely ladies are something you don't want to miss.

I haven't been back in many years and long for a quick glimpse of what I'm missing. Rob and I had plans to visit in November for my niece's Quince, but that may not work out. Enjoy!

Above all, use commong sense and don't be affraid to ask questions. You'd be surprised how well educated some of the population really is. Like I mentioned, some of my family there is fluent and would be glad to help you out. They could set up a tour of a tequila plant if you're up to it!

Oh, and be courteous! Can't stress that enough. If you need a crash course in Spanish 101, let me know.

That sounds like my niece... she's tall, beautiful, and has the most amazing green eyes!

Wow.. thank you for all the kind offers!
Gotta love CLSB!

I will be there for an Expo and staying at the Hilton from 9/10 thru 9/16...
I could really use your Nephew’s help to get around, but no need to make any arrangements.
I’m not sure what my schedule will be from day to day so it’s hard to lock anything down.

I promise to share my pics with you when I get back.. I hear great things about the Cathedrals and the culture.

One thing I have learned in my travels is never underestimate the people and a big smile with a thank you is universal and will get you a long way!

Spanish 101 hmmmm… I guess I should swing by the book store later and pick up a book.

Thank you again!!

Aw! That's so sweet of you! I just want to hear all about it. Photos will be great!

I'll send my nephew a message and go from there.

Enjoy yourself!

BTW... in Gua... the Tequila is drank straight up... and it will not be uncommon to see the women drink it just as well as the men. They might even out drink the men, so practice before you go!

Oh! Enjoy some ice cream or a "raspado", while you're there, for me!!!

Might want to stay away from the street vendors selling food. Don't want you to spend most of your trip on the toilet.
