I think it's neither. It's not bad because it's a little entertaining but it doesn't really get any points across. If we're comparing it to apple's ads it pails because their commerials make clear points about their product and they're entertaining.

the point of these commercials is just to get people talking. they are very informal and just entertaining with the mild subtle hint at the end that people should check out what MS is up to. when you are microsoft and pretty much own the market, they dont need to spend a lot of time advertising why they are better than the competition. its just fun commercials to get you feeling comfortable about the company and the characters of the ads. not downright arrogance that comes from apple.

I like seinfeld, but i think the ads are dumb. not because I'm against microsoft, but they barely pertain to computers or software. and it cost microsoft a shit ton of money to make. Just look at seinfeld's cut alone.

I'm a Microsoft-guy and I have to say those commercial are terrible. They are not 'hip' or cool like the Apple commercials they are clearly defending themselves from, and have nothing to do with the brand.

This is actually a much funnier, better produced video from Microsoft:

Since when has MSFT had to rely on advertising aside from Xbox. That being said, this commercial blows. There is so much potential with those two together. The ad company should be canned. I only like when Bill pulls out his geek ID.

well they must not be that great....

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/17/...get-a-mac-ads/

Quote:
Valleywag was one of the first to report that Microsoft will be officially moving away from the use of Jerry Seinfeld in "phase two" of their $300 million ad campaign, though there appears to be some debate about whether or not this was part of the original plan.

The two Seinfeld Microsoft ads, Shoe Circus and New Family, generated over 2000 comments on MacRumors alone.

The NYTimes confirms this plan but also reveals that Microsoft will be taking direct aim at Apple's "Get a Mac" ads in which John Hodgman who plays "PC" opposite Justin Long as "Mac".
One new Microsoft commercial even begins with a company engineer who resembles John Hodgman, the comedian portraying the loser PC character in the Apple campaign. “Hello, I’m a PC,” the engineer says, echoing Mr. Hodgman’s recurring line, “and I’ve been made into a stereotype.”

The new ads will have some appearances from Bill Gates but will also show other celebrities as everyday PC users in "fast-paced, upbeat vignettes" about their use of Microsoft Windows based PCs.

The NYTimes cites a number of research companies who felt that the buzz surrounding the first two ads were sufficiently positive and accomplished their goal.

love the commercial. I love bill gates and seinfeld. Boo gates but as a ceo he has never changed. And what he does as a person for children is great. He donates a lot of money and time trying to get our schools to be better.

Per CNBC today,

Quote:
Microsoft on the offensive, launching a new TV ad campaign, spending $10 million for the services of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who would be part of a massive, $300 million ad spend.

To say the ads were met with mixed reviews is putting it kindly. Seinfeld joined Bill Gates in these quirky ads that made little sense, had virtually no message, and sent tongues wagging not for their creativity or how compelling they were, but how weird they were instead.

A blog or two speculated tonight that Microsoft would announce the end of those ads tomorrow. I've just spoken to a Microsoft source who confirms the ads will cease, that Microsoft is canceling them after only a few weeks and will be making that announcement tomorrow.

Confirmed.

It's a stunning rebuke for an ineffective concept that seemed misguided from the beginning, and had no chance at all of competing against the wildly successful "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" ads. (I've written a couple of posts recently about this.)

And it's an even bigger black eye for ad firm Crispin Porter+Bogusky. The firm's had a spotty track record with avant-garde concepts that resonate for their strangeness, sometimes more than their effectiveness. Sadly, for Microsoft, this might be another one of those times.

Microsoft tells me that the plan was never to use Seinfeld beyond the two or three ads he's already appeared in. I find that next to impossible to believe. That's a healthy chunk of change for such a tiny amount of work. If true, then Microsoft sure seems to be playing fast and loose with its money, and in an economy like this one, that's a bit of a surprise. If not, why lie about it? It's not like the ads were a secret. We all saw 'em. And most of us had the same reaction.

Just a shame that Microsoft [MSFT 24.73 0.16 (+0.65%) ] didn't have the same reaction before those ads actually made it to air.
