Bears Drop a Close One

Despite the loss, I thought that the defense and special teams looked very solid yesterday. The offense did a good job moving the ball in the first half, and that kept the defense rested and ready to play. Awesome production in the first half.

The second half was not as pretty. The offense got conservative and they couldnt flip the switch when needed. Orton over threw 3-4 key deep passes. While he showed decent arm strength, he showed the accuracy challenges that he has...at least on down the field play. He did have a few nice lazers that he threaded in there. Forte performed well and it looked like he had good vision. Olson fumbled twice, one of which led to a touchwown. If I could pin the loss on one guy, Olsen takes the blame.

Any other comments?

I like Orton for this loss. Olson's fumbles were both in the 1st half correct? (Didn't see 2nd and 3rd quarter). Orton cannot complete a pass >10 yards. As you said, he overthrew 3-4 easy passes which would have easily put the Bears ahead. Those were passes the Bears NEEDED in the 4th quarter. He also botched a couple shorter passes in the 4th as well. It seemed like Orton fell apart at the end of the game when he was under pressure to win the game. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Orton cannot win a game. He is only capable of not losing.

Olson fumbles were bad. They came from trying to do too much. Horrible last 2 plays of the game. Give the F'n ball to Forte. He had two long runs called back because of holding.

You bring up a lot of valid points. I have never been a big Orton fan, but I am trying to be supportive since we really dont have many choices right now. Lovie is a loyal guy, so he will give Orton a majority of the season to see what you can do. I completely agree about Ortons lack of ability to win the game. I know it is early in the season, but he has not even put a TD on the board yet. To add, he is averaging a whopping 7 yards a pass play. That is not going to cut it.

I dont want to go back to the Grossman/Orton debate, but at least Grossman could score. You look at a guy like A. Rodgers who has less game time experience than Orton and he is averaging 2-3 TD's a game. I am not trying to say that they should be at the same place, especially since Rodgers got mentoring from one of the greats. Even still, Orton should be able to put up better numbers. I consider myself a very devoted Bears fan, but I was getting very bored watching the game yesterday.

Orton wasn't too bad. Yes some plays he fucked up on but Olson, I think lost us the game and not giving the ball to Forte on that 4th and 1 drive, big mistake.

I noticed two things:

1) I never want to hear "illegal block in the back" again this year, they took care of the whole year's worth yesterday.

2) I think the refs had to get new penalty flags for the second quarter since they were faded after the first.

I was getting furious about the penalties! At first it was funny because it was just the Panthers doing it. Then, the Bears decided to join them and cause issues on the big plays.

Orton can manage the game, not win them. We were done when the Bears were down in the 4Q. Horrible play calling on 3rd and 1. Run it with Forte and the clock stops at the two minute warning. What is with the quick WR pass that was almost picked.

Orton threw in to tripple coverage several times that should of been picked and then missed a few wide open guys. He was either underthrowing the deep ball and then the bad overthrown ball to Booker for an easy TD. The Bears gave that game away.

I was big orton fan! But yesterday He played like ass... I think he got lucky with some of them throws in double and triple coverage! I think his stats for over 10 tens yards throwing the ball were 2 for 18! You can't win football games throwing the ball only 10 yards!! I hope it was just a off day for him! I think the bears have a great chance to win some games this year!!

I hope you're right. My biggest issue w/ Orton is that I do not feel confident in his ability to make thebig plays. He made a few crucial 3rd down conversions in week 1 that were very refreshing to me. However, he still has yet to find the end zone, which is big concern. Also, he has been throwing some dangerous passes, and missing receivers on several crucial plays. To give him the benefit of the doubt, I am going to attribiute this to the fact that he split reps w/ Grossman during training camp and preseason. If he can't elivate his game though, then I will be severely disappointed. I have said this before, but I still think Grossman is the better of the 2 QB's. He can be risky at times, but he has better accuracy and arm strength...which stretches the field and will help the running game. And in return, help the passing game. It will be interesting to see what Lovie does by mid-season if we have a less than stellar record.

Grossman is the better Qb. Just he gets no support from the fans or the media and I think it's ruin his chances of being a qb for the bears. I don't think Lovie Smith will give up on Orton this season no matter how bad it gets. He gave Rex many chances when I thought he should've not been starting qb. We'll have to wait and see over all I think the bears will have a good season just really depends on if the Off. can start scoring some points!!

I think we will have a better season than last year, but it will be difficult to make the playoffs. The one thing that we have going for us is that outside of GB, the rest of the NFC north looked like crap the past few weeks. Detroit hasnt figured it out, and T. Jackson has not figured out how to use the weapons he has in Peterson and Berrian to make big plays.
