Microsoft Excel

Has anyone ever taken in-depth, advanced, classes on Excel, mainly targeted at financial analysis?

Any suggestions to where I can look? I'm already looking into Triton and Wright to see what they can offer.

what are you trying to do?

Willard: When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle.

Learn pivot tables, lookup functions and all that good stuff. I'd like to become an "expert."

never took a class but for some reason management types love excel.

all the functions are in the help file and it gives an example for each function. havent really run into anything where i needed an excel book yet cuz the help file is pretty good.

my boss dosent like to look at my copy of the stuff i send to him cuz he cant read any of my functions and they are pretty simple functions. ;( so i have to make a copy and just paste the values of the cell then i let him do all his management math to get the same number that i already gave him.

I taught myself everything I already know in Excel but I feel that I plateaued. I figure if I take a class and get some kind of certificate, it will "glow" on my resume and help start some conversations.

I want to be a specialist, not a generalist.

that seems like a gigantic waste of time and money.

I thought I knew a ton about excel (Pivot tables, charts, some macro experience), but when I took over at my current employer, my predecessor just blew me away with the Visual Basic macros and reports he developed.

If there's a reasonably priced class, i'd consider it, but most of the experience I got is by "hacking" and a little guidance from experts who are willing to share.

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

I highly recommend purchasing a book and doing it yourself. Its not that difficult, and there are forums where you can post questions about pivot tables and so on.

Are you in college? My University offers free Excel courses (as well as other software) so maybe your university/college does something similar.

Good luck!

I did that and learned by clicking and stuff and now because I now know a lot I get to do the reporting for my department... oh joy. By the time I am done with the damn report it's a 10 meg file.
Pivot table makes things easy and I did stuff different and the hard way and once I started using the pivot table it cut my time in half.
