Dupage electric code?

Where can I find the electric code in plain english for dupage county? I live in woodridge, and want to add a dedicated 20amp circuit for my garage. Also adding some outlets, lights, etc. I know in cook county you need to run conduit, is this the case here as well?

Oh ok, I thought it was all of illinois, then a buddy at work said his new home was mostly romex, (plainfield/joliet) so then I thought I better check before I spend a bunch of money on conduit.

Thanks vcook for the help.

conduit is cheap and you cant drive a nail through it on accident. By the time you're done with the project you'll have mastered bending it too.

Ah, you happened to hit my area of expertise! I'm a plan reviewer for a living - codes are my second language. LOL

Illinois is "home rule", which means unless you are in an unincorporated area, the codes established by your town take precedence. I found Woodridge online. (My postcount is too low to post links yet! GRRR!)
According to this, you are on the 2005 National Electric Code, but with local amendments. The amendments are not listed online - your first step would be to contact the building department and ask for these.

If you could give me a few more details on your project, I can look up the requirements for you. Is it an attached or detached garage? If it's detached, are you running the feeder underground or overhead?

You won't save much money if any doing romex instead of conduit and it won't be as safe.

They let you get away with all kinds of hacky stuff in podunk.

Bending conduit is easy...when you don't have to do it yourself

hahaha, extension cord in the wall... oh man..

My project: Currently my attached garage is on the same circuit as my bathroom, there is ONE outlet and ONE light. Fuck that. I'm adding 4 4' flourencent light fixtures, one recessed light (my garage has a little stupid hallway thing leading to the door). The lights will be controlled by existing switches, one at the front and one at the back of the garage. Then I plan on adding 4 outlets for plugging in tools, vacuums, extra lights, whatever, one outlet in each corner so i don't need extension cords all over. Also i want to put the garage on it's own circuit, outlets will be GFCI protected, i'll run conduit (thanks for the clarification), and i'm tossing around the idea of putting in a 220 outlet since all i'd have to do is run one extra wire. I don't have any 220 equipment as of right now, but why not add it. That's about it, nothing really too major, jsut trying to make my garage more practical.

Sounds like a good plan! One 20 amp should be plenty for that load. If you're running circuits anyway, it would definitely be more practical to run the 220 now, rather than having to add it later. Conduit is certainly safer overall and more professional - sounds like you're going that route, so I won't bother looking up whether it's required.

Good luck with your project!
