Effect of a Bad Economy...

There have been some before me, and I am sure that there will be some after me. I was getting ready to step away from my desk for lunch, when I got a call from my manager. After a very brief exchange of greatings, I was informed that he had our HR manager on the line. Anyone want to take a guess where this one is going?

As of 12:30 PM this afternoon, I have been officially laid off. A bit hard to believe, considering I spent all day last Thursday taking our CEO on visits to meet with clients and prospects. I understand that in business tough decisions need to be made, but it is even worse when they are made about you.

Sorry to hear that, seems the economy is hitting alot of people hard.

What field were you in?

The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character

Four weeks ago Friday @ 4PM, my manager comes into my office and says "You got a minute?" The HR dude was on the speakerphone...you can guess where it went from there.
When sales are down over 50%, the ax has to drop somewhere.
Good luck in your job search.

I was working in a sales/consulting position for a company that focuses on improved business processes w/in large companies.

This was a calculated risk on their behalf, and I think it is going to hurt them dearly. They save themselves some cash in the short term, but I have accounts that were scheduled to close w/in the next month that would put about $500K on the books for them. As relationship focused as sale is, I would be surprised if these accounts close.

Thanks everyone for the support. This is the way the cookie crumbles. I love how they like to sit you down and break it to you lightly. I can take it, just tell me you are letting me go. Lets skip all the small talk. Tell me my compensation, if any, and let me get on my way. When it is all said and done, they try to pretend that they are sympathizing with your situation. Get out of here. If they really did, we wouldnt be in this situation to begin with.

I'm sorry to hear about this, guys.

I'm working two jobs to stash away and pay off things in the event this happens to me. I'm pretty safe in my industry, but I don't want to jinx myself. You never know....

I'm sure everyone can relate.... and can see why sales are down....

Gas prices have hit the home hard, and its so noticeable. Groceries are too high for me to get those extra tasty things, restaurants are too expensive to gather with friends at frequently, gas is too high for a trip to northern minnesota to see my family, and the cost of all goods have gone up so its a matter of choosing what I can buy versus getting all on my list.... less household cleaners so I can buy a new lamp for my car, or less treats or toys for the dog so I can get more dog food.

Luxury buys are dissipating. Some people are not as fortunate... and are having to alter necessities.

I wish you good luck!

Sorry about your job. I got laid off last Tuesday and its been hard just dealing with the reality that I wont be doing the same job that I did for about 10 years. Keep your head up. I am a firm believer that everything in life happens for a reason. Good luck......

You have my sympathies. My corp is a subsidiary of Lehman Bros so we nearly lost our jobs a few weeks back too (I wound up being part of the Barclays deal). Our future is still tenuous. Hope they took care of you when they showed you out.

Thanks again everyone for the support.

I will continue to do what I can to fight through the troubled times to come. I have reached out to some industry contacts, so now it is a matter of finding something that is a good fit. I'll tell you what, it has been one hell of a Monday!!
