Ticket avoidence strategy

Whats your secret? Do you get tickets often? How fast do you typically drive?

I don't use a radar detector I think they give you a false sense of security especially with the instant on radar that a lot of PD's now have. On the highway I always scan ahead and look for brake lights. I also always check on ramps. I'll typically travel between 5 and 15 mph faster than traffic. On secondary roads I like to keep it less than 15 over most of the time unless I'm familiar with the area and know any potential trouble spots.

My Gear saved my life.

Also, don't hug the tank unless you have to. The more you sit up I think the more it looks like you're doing the right thing.

I just got my Zumo 550 installed. I was amazed at how fast our bikes are indicating. If you are doing 50mph indicated, you are actually only doing about 46-47mph.

Drive a piece of shit
Never stay in the left hand lane for too long
If driving in the daytime, switch off driving with your headlights on and off.
Know radar traps
If on a highway and you see one car pulled over in oncoming traffic, look for the Leo buddy on your side of the road.
Watch on ramps. Great place for Leo to hide and merge in traffic.
If changing lanes a lot to go faster than traffic, do not always use your turn signals.

FWIW, my last ticket of any kind was 1997.

hmm I passed a radar sign that said I was doing 53 when my indicated looked like 55 sooooo I'd say mine is pretty darn close. I tend to go ... uhm... fast... and I got a ticket a few weeks ago =\ 30 over.... ouch...

We're talking general strategy bike or car.

Blend in, no abrupt moves, stay in the right lane. I love to find a rabbit someone I can follow a few hundred yards back and really eat up the miles.

I like to do this also. Really awesome when it's a loud rice burner or a red Camaro or something that just screams "ticket me"

I'm not saying to cut people off. But if you have plenty of room, low traffic driving, ect, using your turn signals less may draw less attention to yourself. Last accident I had was when I was stopped at a light and rearended. That was in '02. Last accident before that was '93. I am a safe driver.

Radar detector helps you avoid a number of speed traps but won't help stupid. Watching everything around you seems to be your best bet. Not speeding in areas you are unfamiliar with, or could contain speed traps also helps. Never speed in the last 5 days of the month if you can help it (every ticket i've ever received has been the end of the month). Speed intelligently (interstate etc, not 55 in a 40 etc).

Sorry man, not trying to start anything. Just thinking about driving to and from school everyday that happens to me at least once each day. I try to keep a safe distance from the car in front of me whether I'm on the bike or the cage and I guess a safe distance = "go a head and merge right in front of me, there's room"
And by safe distance I mean about a sec interval. I prefer a good 2 sec interval but that just never works in real life.

And about the rear ending, I know how you feel. Since I've been driving the only accident I've been in was when someone rear ended me at a red light.
Dane Cook said it best;
"Why did you stop at that red light and let me hit you doing 80?"

Usually, when you are traveling at 140mph+ and there is a cop on the side of the road running radar, by the time he realizes what just went past him, you are already a few miles down the road. So, just travel at that rate of speed or higher and you are all goods.

I see a lot of people also get stopped for blowing past a single squad with lights on the side of the road. They seem to assume that since they have somebody pulled over they won't get you. Low and behold, when you pass them at 20-30 over the speed limit, they are just sitting by themselves with lights on.

No worries there Spoil9. It was hard to explain what I meant. Now that we all talked about it, someone is going to get nailed

Once I was pulled over on the Speed Four because it looked so goofy, the officer didn't think it was street legal. I was pulled over a month ago on the 996 because the officer wanted to know if I needed help with my bike. She thought it sounded like it rattled too much.

My strategy for avoiding tickets on the bike is to avoid major roads/interstates.

If/when I have little choice but the interstate, I try to do not more than 10-15 over.
