German crash course.

Does anyone have a (good) experience with any self-pace German Language courses? like Rosetta Stone or something? I've just purchased my flight to Vienna and I leave in less than a month. I figure it would be a good thing to know SOME German at least.

Thanks!

I took 3 years of German in High School. I tried using when in Stuttgart for a training trip. The person I was trying to speak to simply looked at me like I was an idiot and said with only the slightest accent, "I speak perfect English." The unspoken part of the statement was "please quit butchering my language and making things difficult"

Just FWIW.

I used to have the rosetta stone that had the most common 20 languages while I was in Iraq. But somewhere between there and here I lost it.
If I find it, I'll let ya know.

What is the best way to learn a foreign language on your own? I have heard Rosetta stone only helps you converse, and does little to help you read and write the language. Is there another software curriculum that can help teach you to speak, write, and read another language? Or is it best to just go to a dedicated class at the local community college?

When I was there in last it was 50 DM. 75 DM for full service. That was 10 years ago plus now it's euros so I would guess 100 USD.

English and German are very similar in structure and speech...i am not the best to talk to as i have not learned much of the language, but if you don't mind looking stupid, a lot of the time you can read something and sound it out (out loud) and figure out what it means by also using you surroundings... Like if your walking down a street, and you see people inside a building with mugs and drinking, and the place has a sign that says, Beir und sausage...you can bet you found a bar/restaurant...

Also on a side note, it is pretty surprising how many euros speak decent English, so if all else fails, just ask if someone speaks English. I'd trust more euros to know how to speak understandable English over Americans...

Best advice is learn to ask politely if someone speaks English in their native language. Please, Thank You, and the greeting of the day will get you pretty far.
