Man charged in motorcycle death of 4-year-old son

| Monday, October 6, 2008 4:45 AM CDT

PEORIA, Ill. - An East Peoria man was in handcuffs when he said goodbye to his dead 4-year-old son, the victim of a motorcycle accident in the parking lot of a Peoria lumberyard.

Police say 21-year-old Michael Wells was performing a wheelie on his motorcycle in the parking lot late Saturday afternoon when he struck his son, Ashton, who was riding a bicycle nearby.

Michael Wells was arrested later Saturday evening for aggravated reckless driving, operating a motorcycle on one wheel, and other charges.

Ashton's grandmother, Crystal Wells, said Saturday was the first time the boy was allowed to watch his father and his friends practice motorcycle stunts. She told police Ashton darted away from his mother and rode toward his father so quickly that Michael Wells didn't have time to react.

Information from: Journal Star, http://pjstar.com

So sad... so many factors to think about. Chances are the little guy wanted to be just like dad, and lets face it, kids CAN get away from you that quick. It only takes a second

I would tend to believe that the guilt from the death of his son will be worse than any punishment the judge could ever lay down.

RIP little one.

The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character

That really sucks.

I have 7 and 2 year old daughters and it would instantly kill me on the inside if I recklessly caused them any harm.

True about how quick they can get away from you tho...

Yet I till see parents walking across busy streets without holding on to little ones.

Guaranteed fawked up way to learn a lesson.

Crazy shit, I was in Peoria this weekend for a wedding, saw a whole group of sportbikers doing stunts in a parking lot, wonder if it was the same posse.

Sad story but how are they charging him with moving violations when it happened on private property?

I agree its a good thing he isn't being charged with anything. I'm sure he's suffered enough and gets to think about this for the rest of his life. However this child had no business being anywhere near people acting stupid on motorcycles. Its a shame he had to die so daddy and his buddies can fill their egos trying to act cool. Doesnt seem so cool now does it? At least they act stupid in an empty parking lot instead of on the street. Thats more than I can say for 90% of the other morons riding jap bikes.
This must have been written by a drunken rider of american bikes.
