So I did it....

I asked my g/f to marry me. She said yes. She wants to get married outside the United States. She's thinking somewhere in the Caribbean or Mexico.

Question is, has anybody gotten married outside the US? Does the couple have to actually get married here in the US and it's just a "ceremony" outside the US?

Thought I'd start here....

Thanks,

There were a number of couples that got married at the Sandals resort in Jamaica my wife and I went to last week. Give the resorts a call and they'll hook you up.

BTW, congratulations.

How did you ask her?

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Congrats!

My fiance and I are considering the same thing. We're looking at some all-inclusive, no-kids places in Cancun or the Carribean as well.

She's done a bunch of research, and found some awesome places.....just can't recall the names off the top of my head.

Congrats! My wife and I got married in Sandals in Jamaica and it was great. No problems. I suggest getting a tan before you go though. My wedding pictures look horrible. You can barely see me with the sandy background.

Edit: It was Beaches and not Sandals.

Medevil Times has this thing where people can get "Knight'd" They call your name, you go up to where the King and Queen sit and the King Knight's you.

I set it up where they called my name, asked for a witness, (my g/f was choosen to be my witness,) the King goes through his little talk...I'm already on my knees so I turn to her and bust out the ring and ask her to marry me in front of like 600 people.

She was surprised!

We got married last year at Grand Paraiso in Riviera Maya

THey hook you up with a wedding coordinator and she handles everything.. THey were great...

Really reduced the female stress factor.. Which .. to make the biggest understatment ever made... Can be a problem... PM me or my wife (I would be the faster response.. She would be the longer more well thought out response..)

THere are a few issues if you do mexico (having to get everything translated and back.. ) but thats only if you want that ceremony to be legal.. most people i think just do the ceremony and file the paperwork.. It was important for her it be one shot, one wedding, done.. So we actually had to do everything legal .. our marriage certificate is in spanish

SIde note... they still require blood tests down there first

btw she is chinadoll8888 on here
or ping her at [email protected] .. She did TONS of research and Gran Paraiso is definitely the one to choose (no kids but the neighboring resorts allow them so they are close enough for family, (plus you get visitor rights to all the other clubs since you are at the top one.. and they treat you like royalty.. it's amusing when some rude people are waiting for their trolly to get from A to B and you have people driving golf carts out to pick you up.. they drive you to and from anywhere in those little golf carts.. its awesome) they only do 1 per day.. where everywhere else was doing 5 to 10 per day.. we had pretty much the entire staff .. literally we had like 5 to 15 staff members running around just for us helping.. there were 18 people at our wedding.. the private dinner is awesome.. it is on the ocean.. they shut down the entire restaurant and you have the chefs and 2 private waiters (one was the manager of the restaurant) and they take care of everything.. whatever you want...

All in all it couldnt have gone smoother.. not a single issue.. Which.. From what I understand listening to her talk with her gf's .. that's not common

Congrats And Im Sorry.

Willard: When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle.

Sorry didn't look for your PM. Greg told me to log on so I'm trying to hurry before Keira wakes up.

1. Use review sites like tripadvisor.com.
2. Decide on what type of resort you want to go to... ie: sandals, beaches, etc.
3. Do you want kids to join your guests (if so, finding accomodations there or nearby and a resort that allows them on the grounds will be a factor).
4. How much you want to spend, how "classy" (will affect your choice of food/drinks, entertainment)
5. If you two are going alone or if you will invite guests, if there will be a budget to consider for them... (ie: in Mexico, for a legal wedding ceremony, you must stay there a minimum of 4 business days to establish "residency" and if you want your friends to be witnesses, they must also do the same ... but most will provide witnesses if you do not have any ... some charge you for that though).
6. Some places charge extra for a wedding... and have ala carte things like flowers, photos, cake... some places provide ceremony/dinner, etc free for 1week stay etc

we stayed at the Iberostar Grand Paraiso hotel in Riviera Maya (about 30 minutes south of Cancun we liked it because it's less touristy, has great diving, etc) which is a 5 star hotel connected to 2, 3, and 4 star level of the same brand so we had full access privileges which made menus/entertainment wider range yet made our grounds exclusive to others.

I had originally wanted to marry in Fiji... but the requirements were outragous. Decide on the location, find out the reqs, and contact them to see if your date is available. You can do all the set up online/phone. Paperwork/ date reservation. Then do the final prep when you reach the resort (music, food, flowers, etc)...

Hope this helps! If you look at Greg's smugmug site, you'll see tons of our wedding pics all 3000+ LOL ... in case you want to use the same place we did, contact Jessica through the Iberostar website.

Best of luck, and congrats!!!

I've stayed at those iberostar resorts, great place! Though it's not fair to refer to the older properties that are adjacent as 2 or 3 star, they're better than that. I stayed at both the Lindo(right after it opened but before the Grand Paraiso was finished) and Paraiso Beach and the funny thing is we enjoyed the older resorts better mostly due to pool layout.

Marrage license is what I'm seeing as the big problem. Not a problem really but I went to a wedding in Italy which seemed easy enough but the groom was Canadian and bride US citizen. She could go to the US embassy in Florence to get the paperwork but he had to go to Rome from Sienna but he just thought that since there was a US embassy in Florence it would be that easy for him.

Not a big deal but he did loose a day going to Rome and back.

Iberostar is a deal. Not as nice as some but it is good for the money. I stayed at all these as recent as last March 08. My recommendation is to look on their website at the Google Earth images and stay at the one closest to the airport because it's a long ride to the farthest resort (1hr?).

Anyway, wife had a major medical emergency while we were there and Iberostar hooked us up at the hospital ER in Cancun. Lesson was that while it sucked we probably had better care than in the US.

The big downside with Iberostar is the entertainment. It's hokey to say the least. Oh ya, and the drinks. Maybe it's the humidity but I swear they watered down everything. I was drinking 12+ beers/day and rounding that out with fruity drinks and shots and never once did I get buzzed. The whole family said the same thing and we went with 7 adults.
