Helicopter crash in AURORA

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,438743,00.html

AURORA, Ill. A medical helicopter crashed in a Chicago suburb, killing three crew members and a 13-month-old patient, authorities said early Thursday.

The helicopter was headed to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago from Valley West Hospital in Sandwich when it went down minutes before midnight, said Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Robb Wallers.

Children's Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Julie Pesch initially said the child, a girl, was being transported to the hospital because of epileptic seizures. She later said the child's symptoms were not clear.

Wallers said the helicopter belonged to Air Angels Inc., an emergency medical transport service based at Clow Airport in suburban Bolingbrook. Telephone calls to the Air Angels offices were not answered early Thursday.

However, Air Angels CEO Jim Adams told the Chicago Tribune the helicopter's crew included the pilot, nurse and a paramedic employed by the company. He added the helicopter's pilot did not report mechanical problems, and weather was not an issue.

According to Wallers, the helicopter crashed in a field near a residential area in east Aurora and was engulfed in flames. No one on the ground was hurt.

The Aurora crash is the third involving Air Angels helicopters. In January 2003, an Air Angels helicopter crashed killing the pilot. Investigators determined pilot error and weather caused the accident. Mechanical problems was blamed for an August 2007 crash in which there were no injuries.

It was at least the ninth fatal crash in the past 12 months across the country involving medical transport helicopters. Observers say the accident demonstrates a disturbing rise in the number of emergency air transport crashes, and wonder if a system designed to save lives may be costing them.

Prayers to families, friends and coworkers of all involved.

Do they normally fly that low, or might there have been a problem and they were trying to set it down in the field but unfortunately didn't clear the obstructions?

The news said it was a no-fly area. Don't know why they were even around there.

As the investigation progresses, We'll find out if the tower was properly lit and what is in the chopper's data recorder (if there is one).

Sad that a life saving flight has turned into a tragedy.

I just talked to my buddy and he knows all the people that were on the chopper. All really good friends of his. He's still in shell shock over the whole thing he said. Hopefully nobody suffered during the crash. RIP.

They do not have flight data recorders on helicopters. For the most part only larger aircraft "airliners" have FDRs

Unlike what the news said that is not a no fly zone. There are rules about how low an aircaft is allowed to fly, but in an emergency a pilot can deviate from those rules as they see fit.

Saw the news choppers at ~430am on my way to work... thought it was a UFO. Couldn't hear them from Diehl.

My thoughts with the family and friends.

Very very sad....I cannot imagine what the parents must be going through.

I dont understand why they would be flying just 700ft from Sandwich to DT Chicago? They were 20 miles into their flights? There must have been a problem.

Someone elsewhere said they were enroute to central dupage but were turned away because they were full.

I was sleeping directly adjacent to the tower/crash. The GF heard the accident last night!! That tower is about 200 feet from the bedroom window.

Drove right through the clean up crews and such this morning. Crazy. They've got a bunch of the wreckage piled up on the side of Eola.

No problem.
I have passed by there a few times already because it's a main rd, but I see the cops stopping everyone who pulls into the apartment complex. I was wondering what was going on there.
