A few pics of Istanbul

I spent the last few days in Istanbul for some training. We were pretty well locked up in a room that was full of people that were all the way from Vladivostok Russian, to St. Petersburg Russian and all the way south to Sub-Sahara Africa. It was a good mix of people and a diverse range of skills and experiences.

We didn't have much time for pics, so here are only a few.

Istanbul was a beautiful (rugged) city. The people were generally friendly, though you could tell there was some underlying tension with all the security protocol in place. The police carried sub-machine guns and each of the larger venues, including our hotel, had metal detectors and wands for pat downs.

We did go out to a club the last night and they had wands and security on the street. Once they saw we spoke English, the security (head goon) stepped forward and you could see what looked like taxi drivers step away from walls and people reading papers stand up. All in all it looked like they had 12-15 people on the street ready to react to problems. A fun time anyway.

I will have to work on getting another camera. If anybody has a good link to some "picture taking for dummies" site I'd like to get a bit better at taking pictures and learning what to look out for.

Next trip should be to Saudi Arabia either at the end of the month or in November sometime.

I talked to one guy that spoke horrible English about riding. The extent of the conversation was "You ride bike, I ride bike. I ride bike Turkey, you ride bike Chicago." I think it left both of us with a headache.

well, if you have the flash turned on, turn it off. the flash is only effective if you're taking a picture in short range (i.e. you're right in front of the subject of the picture)

if there is a setting for "ISO" turn it to the highest number you have for taking night shots. put it on the lowest number for highly lit daytime shots.

if you don't have settings for either of those, get a new camera. I have a panasonic DMC-TZ5. it takes pretty good pics for a point and shoot and the best optical zoom of any camera that will easily fit in your pocket (10x).

some cool pics of the area though. I wish I had the ability to travel as much as you, even if it is work related.

Istanbul is a nice place to visit.
The only thing is - they drive like damn crazy people.

Looks like an interesting place. Not on my list of places to see, but it's now been moved to the list of future considerations. Thanks!

That's quite true. I will probably be going to a number of places that aren't on my "to do" list. But it would still be interesting to see any number of these places on the companies dime and then use my vacation to see what I want to.

Photo tip #1, any camera in the past 10 years can take fantastic photos. You need to RTFM so you know how to use yours to the fullest.

Photo tip #2, practice at home when you can afford to take crappy photos, not when you are on a trip in exotic places where you'll regret fubbing the shots.

Photo tip #3, understand "exposure" and repeat tips 1 and 2 till you reach the limits of your camera.

I think you have a great eye for taking photos, that's not your weakness at all...in fact, one key point I'm noticing in each of your photos is that as a viewer, you really feel like you're there. Not everyone can do that. Something to keep in mind.
