Yeah, if your first shoot gets entangled, you can release and pull the backup shoot. I think the backup shoots are typically smaller though.

I'd be more worried about causing problems for the plane with the shoot stuck on the tail!

EDIT: Damnit, too slow again. Crap. I need to type faster or drink more coffee.

Yeah at the end he cut loose from the chute that was caught and you could tell he was gliding down on his emergency chute.

damn, thats pretty crazy. Although, it would've been pretty badass if the pilot pulled the plane into a stall, and started dropping a bit as the guy hauled himself onto the tail, and jumped off (and then of course gets sliced up by the prop )

Although that would be scary, at least he had some altitude to be able to cut his main and still pull his reserve.
A couple ppl on here can agree, try doing that at 700-800 ft with full combat load at night and it's a whole different story.

That's really just a bad day. The thing that really sucks is him main was probably ruined. It probably cost $2500-4000. The only thing that sucks about having to deploy the reserve is having to pay a rigger to repack it. Well that and the tha fact that your main may get lost or damaged.
