Question about LCD tv's

In the long run is there a significant difference in an Insignia tv and a Sony?

You're asking a very broad question, but yes. It all depends how picky you are.

Im just wondering if sometimes the name makes it significantly more expensive...and I'm sure it does. Reason I'm asking is because Im getting abigger tv so rather than spending 1500-1800 on a sony why not spend 1200 on another tv with similar qualities

go do a search on avsforum.com with the model number you're interested in, there will be loads of info. the only decent budget lcd and plasmas I've seen are the visios. the rest in my opinion are pretty crappy.

Do your homework. Compare everything. A lot of the big companys make the off brand stuff. The just use cheaper components on the inside.

I came here to drink some beer and kick some ass. And it looks like we are all out of beer.

yes and that is the difference. you see a lot of panel and glass sharing between manufacturers, but the backlighting, and electronics make a big difference.

You own an M5 - buy the biggest, baddest, most expensive TV available.

Most likely you will not find a off-brand with the same specs as a sony or a samsung...does that matter...well it depends on how much you are into watching tv/video and/or have something to compare it to.

Also, because the off-brand will have some cheaper components, the potential of it breaking down sooner increases, but you never know.

In the end, it is your money, so do your research, and spend it wisely. I would just hate to spend $1500 on something that potentially will spend more time at the repair shop then me watching it.

Good Luck,
Greg

Cost? Well I bought a Sony 46" LCD at ABT 2 weeks ago. ABT price was $500 less than Best Buy or Circuit City. It was less than the comparable Samsung too.

I bought it at such a price where the discount brands didn't make sense to risk only a $200 savings.

Plus Sony and major brands will have better customer support. It sucks to plug everything in and not have it work and have no where to ask questions about this stuff cept the internet.

I can't say for Samsung but Sony has an 800# which is open until 9pm. I had to call them because my cat jumped on the remote and reset something and I couldn't figure out how to get the TV to pick up my PS3 again.

Should have bought a 360, they don't have that problem

Ha I like your style. Anyway it was an HDMI issue so nothing to do with the PS3 anyway.

See the PS3 actually displays games in 1080p unlike most 360s so I suppose that is something I have to deal with.

I bought a Visio from Costco the automatically double the manufactures warranty. I'll tell you is you have someone who can professionally tune the TV for your room I wouldn't pay any extra for the name brand, it just doesn't matter all that much.

bought a panasonic th-50pz800u about month ago and you can't beat it except with a top of the line Pioneer Kuro (for about $4k). These are plasmas though, which will be waaaay better picture than any LCD.

Visio's are garbage... horrible pq for the $. If you are on a budget, consider Westinghouse - you can save a few bones if you go for one without a tuner (use dishbox or cablebox & HDMI)

Visio is the cheapest tv on the market that has all of the controls necessary for proper color correction and tuning. A cheap properly tuned set will beat an expensive un-tuned set any day.

Westinghouse where you shopping at K-mart?

If its a bright room, I recommend a samsung with LCD backlight - If its in a theater type room with dimmer lighting, go with a plasma.

As the almighty VCook has already pointed out, you get what you pay for.
