Anyone get married fairly recently?

What's the "general" cost of a "decent" wedding these days for about 200 people? Nothing super fancy. i know the BIG cost is the reception. how much "per plate" is a good cost?

Lots of variables to consider.

Saturday nights are the most expensive. Most places give discounts if the wedding is on any other day.

Prices jump during wedding season. I think that spans most of the summer.

My original wedding was going to be at a Hilton on a Saturday night in July with 125-150 people. I think it worked out to $125/person after everything was said and done. They really add cost for things like appetizers, coffee, dessert and open bar.

They also had a buffet style option, which significantly cut the cost down to about $75/person. Pretty much the same food and amenities, but people had to get up a serve themselves.

We completely changed our wedding because we decided a house was a better investment than a wedding, cut the guest list down to 45 people and got married during the day at a forest preserve. Cost about 10% of the original.

Whatever you do not go to Edward Fox. They sent a terrible photographer who didn't know the basics about lighting and capturing the moment and now we are stuck with $1500 worth of photos that we like about 20 out of the 400 pictures the guy took.

I think I payed just under $5000 for a photographer. That's the one thing I definitely didn't want to skimp on.

For a 200 person wedding, I'd imagine it would be quite a bit more. The place I went through would probably send 2 photographers as it's hard to capture a large wedding with only 1 person.

EDIT: I used these people. Came highly recommended and did a great job: http://www.twaphoto.com/

Photographer and Band, 2 things I'd not change.

I'll try to remember the band, they were great. Kruz used them too.

In the end, you get what you pay for.

Eric and I did both a destination beach wedding and a regular formal reception back in the Chicago area for around 12-14K. (I kept receipts and tabs on everything the total I just gave included everything from engagement ring and wedding bands to cost of materials/supplies to make my own decorations, 3 roundtrips tickets to FL, hotel, car rental, reception hall costs here etc...)

When I was looking at reception halls in the suburbs here, the cost of per plate ranged from $40-$80. Try not to have too high of a cost per plate bc there will be people who at the last minute can't make it or do not show up and then you are out that money bc you are stuck paying for the headcount of people you gave based on the RSVP's. (Fridays and Sunday reception are usually cheaper)

I did everything I could to save money on our reception without making it cheesey.

If you have any Q's....I'd be happy to help!

depends on if someone is helping you pay for it and how your family and friends feel about wedding gifts. A lot of people I know who had expensive weddings ended up in the black afterwards with all the gifts.

Most likely the wedding will be in Georgia or South Carolina which is where I plan on moving as soon as I can. I think it will be more of a "country" wedding somewhere and we will have the wedding and reception at the same place - some big mansion or something. We want to keep it simple, really. Not because of cost, but because of who we are really.

Right now I am just thinking about general costs - obviously there are varying levels of what I can get. We are thinking we might get a planner from the area where we are thinking of getting married at... It might be easier to coordinate since we don't live down there, although we both have a lot of family there.

Thanks for the insight all. I had a 50k number in my head, but 30k +/- isn't too bad Cheaper than my Goldwing with all the mods!!

Sweet! Just don't succumb to the poon when she asks you to sell a 'few' bikes.

In the south I would guess about 500 bucks and you could get the remaining members of Skynard to be your band.

That's come up. I am selling a few just to keep things "reasonable" but she is cool with it. She doesn't like the track stuff though...
