Singers of bands.. orignal or new

So many bands out there have members come and go and not much happens unless the singer is replaced. So many famous bands had this done and get yelled at by fans, but IMO the show must go on.
How do you all feel about a band you like and can sing ever song they have gets a new singer? One of my favorite bands had 3 singers (w/ the 2nd singer coming back) Iron Maiden. I liked the Paul Di'anno days were great and when Bruce Dickinson came it was awesome, then came Blaze Bayley. I actually liked Blaze as a singer and I even have his new bands stuff also.
Another band I like that switch singers is Nightwish. I like the new singer so much more, a total different direction with singers. I use to listen to them w/ the old singer but I got sick of her and the new one is awesome.
Anthrax got a new singer to replace John Bush. John replaced Joey Belladonna and John is replaced by Dan Nelson. I saw Dan sing with Anthrax a few months ago and I liked his voice.
Van Halen is a classic example and I like both Sammy and David, both have great and different styles.
So many people think since the singer leaves or gets fired from a that the band should break up. I think finding a replacement is good.
So how many people get mad when the singer is replaced?

That is a good question.

AC/DC Everybody talks about Bon Scott But Brian has been with the band 4 times longer. I think they stayed on track because the singer was not the band.

I guess I just gave the answer. Is the singer the Band? The Stones are not the Stones if Jager leaves, But Santana can use any singer.

Iron Maiden is one of the few bands I like that pulled it off. I love the DiAnno stuff, but they became IRON MAIDEN with Dickinson. Some of my favorite songs were with DiAnno. Phantom of the Opera, Wrathchild, Killers. I'd probably rate Killers as my favorite IM studio album.

Anthrax... I couldn't get into anything after Euphoria. Bush was ok. I have Stomp 442 with Bush, but almost everything with Joey. Back when people still bought actual albums/CDs...

I hate Van Hagar for the most part but think Hagar is more tolerable a human than Roth. Not that I'm a huge fan of Van Roth.

Sabbath did it with their first RJDio album- Heaven and Hell, imo.

I did not like it when Pink Floyd did it.

The Anthrax singer change through me for a loop when I was younger, but I didn't mind it because John Bush had decent metal credability and I actually liked those albums. I did not know they found another singer.

The Motley Crue 'different' singer thing sucked. As did the third VH singer.
AC/DC worked because it was an unfortunate accident, and the lineup hasn't really changed since then. But if you compare 'If you Want Blood, You've Got it", a live Bon Scott era album, to 'ACDC Live', Bon Scott was a powerhouse live singer..Granted, he was drunk all the time, but still a riot.

I think it's good a band can move on with a new singer. BTW Van Halen actually had 4 singers, who can name the 3rd singer (after hagar and it wasn't Gary Cherone)

THIS. Don't forget "prowler" either- still one of my all-time favorite Maiden songs. But "hallowed be thy name," "the wicker man," "the trooper," or "the prisoner"- just to name a few- I just don't see happening with DiAnno's vocal range.

I never heard Ratts new singer, I thought Tim Owens did an OK job in Priest, but he was no Rob Halford.

I saw the Dead Kennedys after Jello had been replaced. EPIC FAIL. Without the sarcasm-drenched tone to the lyrics, the Kennedys were just another punk band.

In a slightly different tone, I don't see anyone replacing Layne Staley for Alice in Chains without giving it a totally different sound.

depends on the situation. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. When the Ungly Kid Joe guy took over for Life of Agony it made them a ton better. Most of the time it doesn't work out cause the singer is too much of the peronality.

My name is JB, people call me JB

Piece of Mind is my favorite Bruce IM album if I had to choose.

I agree that Bruce brought a vocal range that Paul couldn't approach. That's not to say Paul was lacking though.

Live After Death version of Revelations and Rime of The Ancient Mariner are amazing. Better than studio version, imo. Bruce did Phantom and Wrathchild live on LAD. Paul just sounds better doing those songs to me.

I was more pumped by Adrian Smith's return than Bruce's.

Of the new stuff- Dance of Death is a metal symphony. Nomad has a good hook. Montsegur rocks and Paschendale has a nice chug once it gets going (both with great historical stories). Most of the time when bands "get back together" their new stuff sucks. Many of their new songs would fit right into their 80s albums.

The Youngs have always been firmly in control of AC/DC. Bon a friend, but also a tool for their use. They stayed on track because of Angus, Malcom, George and Harry Vanda.

Everybody talks about Bon because Bon was truely a better singer and a better front man. Longevity has nothing to do with it and he would have been with the band longer had he not died.

I am a big Adrian Smith fan, one of the reasons why I play guitar, When he left and Janick Gers came I was upset, i really didn't like Gers. Smith has a great style.
Blazes songs are good when he sings it, and Bruce isn't good singing his stuff. I'm glad Smith and Bruce are back and I saw them during the Brave New World Tour and they were awesome on stage.
I like the new stuff a lot, and Dance Of Death has a lot of good tunes along with A Matter of Life and Death.
Anyone into Helloween? I like Andy's (current singer) voice better then Keskes voice.

BTW, John Bush (who became the singer of Anthrax) was asked by Metallica to join the band after they kicked out Dave Mustaine because Hetfield did not want to sing, but declined because he was dedicated to his band Armored Saint. And Joey Vera, the bass player from Armored Saint, was asked to join Metallica after Cliff Burton died, but declined as well.

I am a huge fan of Armored Saint. One of the most underated Heavy Metal bands of all time. Ahead of their time on Delerious Nomad IMO.

I wonder if and how much they both regret not joing Metallica. I am sure they have been asked this and I could look it up if I wanted to.

Bush was asked long after Mustaine left, I think it was after Master Of Puppets he was asked making Metallica a 5 piece. I read it in one of my Guitar magazines.
Joey Vera also played for Anthrax and I like Frankie Bello a lot better, he's a very under rated bassist and I'm glad he's back with anthrax.

With most bands, the lead signer is the figure head.

Notice how most front men released/replaced don't also play an instrument. Belladonna, Roth, Ozzy, DiAnno, etc.

I know my metal bro. Vera is who you must be thinking of because he was asked to join after Burton died (after Master of Puppets).

It was a weird time because the guys in Armored Saint and I – we started together, I mean, we were 19 years old. I wasn’t going to join another band; I didn’t even know these guys. I knew kind of who they were but I was into my own thing. But a lot was made of it through the years, Metallica went on to be the band that they are, and James [Hetfield] went on to be the amazing vocalist that he is. It’s just a circumstantial thing that every few years it’ll come back up again. I don’t know if people want to bust the guy’s balls that got offered to play with Metallica and declined, but it wasn’t quiet like that at the time. I don’t think it was my destiny.”

"KNAC.COM: Weren't you asked to join Metallica around this time?
JB: Well, it all goes back to one specific gig: when Armored Saint played The Woodstock in Anaheim. This was like '82 and they were there 'cause they lived in that area. They saw us play and they liked me and wanted to get me in the band. And Metallica, at that point, I didn't know anything about them. No one did really. They were really small. So this carried on for a while on and off. Then, when Kill 'Em All was gonna be recorded, that's when they really said, "We want you to join the band." But Armored Saint was starting to take off in L.A. and I was like, "I'm gonna go join you? I've got my own band here, and we're kicking ass and I don't know you guys. I'm not interested." Nothing against them but it didn't make any sense to me that I should go join a band that I thought wasn't any further along than where my band was. And with my history with my band at the time the friendships went back to elementary school. And after that, when they were gonna make Ride The Lightning, they were still flirting with the possibility of getting a singer, and you know, at that point Metallica had started to happen. And we were all like, "Why? James on vocals is just fine." I mean, he's probably made the most improvements of anybody in rock. People used to ask me about it but then it died down. Then there was this article that came out in Rip Magazine with Hetfield, I think, and he brought it up again, that John Bush was asked to join Metallica and then again, it was like, "You were asked to join Metallica?" Here it goes again.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

It didn't say anything about Vera in it. I still have that magazine someplace, I'll dig it up.

That'd be cool. Man, I remember being in 7th grade and listening to Accept's Restless and Wild and my "metal" friends were all like, "that's too heavy."
