I heart gotomypc

I love this tool. I have been able to do anything I needed to do for work while I have been traveling. Printing to a remote printer is a breeze. Sound comes over fine. File transfer is niiiice. Love it. I have it on both computers at work and one that I leave on at home. I highly recommend it for those that need remote access to your computers.

Back to work for me...

Never tried it, but I do use UltraVNC.
Is it similar?

It's a service, not an app. It allows connecting even when there are firewalls/NAT in between. Very convenient, although there are simper solutions for the home PC. I've just set up the Dynamic DNS plus configured my home router to forward SSL port to RDP port. This works in most cases.

My one problem with RDP is that it signs out the current user. I have programs running in the background sometimes and using RDP would sign me out.

The citrix goto products are nice. We use gotomeeting at work. gotomypc is nice for non IT types as it's very easy to setup and use. I wish we could get gotoassist at work but it's very pricey.

My name is JB, people call me JB

You're right, not simpler . Just more straightforward for me, not involving a 3rd party service and all.
