92Gb, 4262 files. I don't download sh$t from the Internet... but ripped some 300 CDs I own to WMA lossless, so that they show up nicely in the Vista Media Center. Using dbPowerAmp batch converter to rip them to MP3s with lower quality for iPod as necessary.

100 gig, 20,000 songs almost all legit. CD's are all in storage though, and have not bought one in years. Lots of stuff that's not licensed in this country. And pandora for work.

Am I the last person to not own a portable mp3 player of any kind?

10,010 files, 49GB

I have everything I want and then some. I own 400+ actual CDs. Only picked and chose tracks off of many. Need to go back and rip the whole CD. Most are 128kbps.

50+gb worth of music.

Willard: When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle.

Do you all keep them as mp3 files? Or do you use flac, ogg (vorbis), wma, the apple proprietary format, or something else? What rate did you find best for your mp3? I was going to start to move my cds over to use a new digital music player, but am not sure whether to use mp3 or ogg (both work on my player). Flac still takes up too much space. Ogg is supposed to be better than mp3 and is not proprietary, but then I can't share them with anyone else as ogg capable players seem to be rare. Someone had recommended 192 kbit/sec VBR mp3 to get closest to cd sound without too big a file size?

WMA Lossless (take about as much space as FLAC). This way I can play it on a decent audio system without hearing a degradation (I do hear a difference between 128Kbps and 320Kbps MP3s; 320kbps MP3s vs FLAC/WMA lossless - not really). Plus it is reliable CD backup.

With the storage prices these days, I wouldn't be concerned about size. One terabyte of storage costs $100. Make it mirrored and it's $200. That is enough for close to 3000 CDs in FLAC/WMA lossless. Convert to lower bitrate for players on demand (select a bunch of folders and let the PC do the work overnight).
