I'm all for it also. Stem cells are the best chance to cure a large number of diseases. The thing that most people don't understand is that the embryos that will be used are only ones that are already due to be destroyed. Either they get used for research, or get incinerated. Isn't it better to help millions of people with them?

Check out this windpipe transplant they did in Spain for a women with a clogged windpipe to one of her lungs:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7735696.stm

They used a donor windpipe, cleaned that pipe of all the cells from the donor, then put it in a "bioreactor" with stem cells from the recipient and then transplanted it in. Body is seeing it's own cells, so no rejection. Sounds pretty good to me. They're saying whole organ transplant with your own cells is the future (taking donor organs and putting your cells on it before putting in your body). Crazy.

A few points of order:

The stem cell technology being used are ADULT stem cells, not embryonic stem cells. Most people are ignorant to the fact that stem cells can come from sources other than embryos. In fact, most of the cutting edge treatments use adult stem cells. To my knowledge, embryonic stem cells have not been utilized to create any treatments.
From wiki:
"However, to date, no approved medical treatments have been derived from embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). Adult stem cells and cord blood stems cells have thus far been the only stem cells used to successfully treat any diseases. "

There is no BAN on stem cell research, embryonic or otherwise. There is a ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cells. Embryonic Stem cell research can be done, just not on the taxpayer's dime.

Who in the thread said anything about embryonic or adult stem cells?

Also, who said there was a ban on research in this thread?

Most people say there's a ban on stem cell research. Period. Full stop. The vast majority of the public doesn't understand that it's on funding.

Now, the post was on "Stem cell Research," not Stem cell research funding, so the implicit subject of the word "ban" is the same as the topic. You'll find the word "funding" nowhere in the post, so attributing funding as the subject of "ban" is unfounded. Maybe that's what he meant, but its not what he wrote. (Maybe BladeRunner can clear that up himself.) Reading carefully means taking context into account.

Given those two facts, I felt it necessary to clear up that confusion.

EXACTLY. And they have found that there are ways of getting stem cells from amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood, and there are ways of "tricking" non-embryonic stem cells into acting like embryonic stem cells. So, why are we insisting on using research that destroys embryos when there are other means?

Additionally, I was reading that embryonic stem cells are too "pluripotent" (i.e., you may not be able to control what they do). I read this in a Tribune column some time ago (too bad I didn't save it). So, the NON-EMBRYONIC stem cells are actually MORE scientifically reliable.

This issue is very close to my heart and I've done a lot of research into this. There are was to make other stem cells act like embryonic stem cells, but they cannot do everything embryonic cells can. The whole point of using embryonic stem cells is they can become any other cell. Nothing else can do this. There are no current treatments using embryonic stem cells because there has been very little research done with them due to the lack of funding. With the ban on federal funding that means any institution that received any federal money, almost every medical school and university, can not do research using any new lines of embryonic stem cells. The current ban on funding has put us 8 years behind in research. The embryos to be used are ones that are due to be destroyed anyway. The are donated from fertility clinics by the people that had the clinic create them. It's better to use them to potentially help millions. Embryonic stem cells can be controlled and have successfully been turned in insulin secreting pancreatic cells. That alone has the potential down the road to cure diabetes. With more research This has the potential to save millions of live and improve the quality of life for millions others. Those that are against this just wait until you or a loved one are affected by a disease that might be helped by this research and I'll bet you change your views. Nancy Reagan did.
