Sorry Bug I missed the anniversary Monday

I know you're a fan.

November 10, 1975 the bulk freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior with all hands. This page is dedicated to the memory of the 29 men lost that night and the families they left behind.

Good Song, sad story.

Most people don't realize the number of ships sunk in the Great Lakes. Lake Michigan has claimed more tonnage per nautical mile than any other body of water in the world.

History Channel has an hour long episode about this event.

Lake Superior would be a harsh place to make a living! Regardless of what time of year, you've only got mintues to live if you wind up in that cold water. I forget the exact numbers but it's always around 40 or 42 degrees f just a few feet below the surface.

That lake is friggen huge too. Biggest in the world, with enough water to cover all of North America in 3 ft.

I love her though, cuz she dumps between 200 & 300 inches of lake effect snow on the UP each winter. Is it time to get the sleds out yet?

By some definitions, The Caspian Sea is the world's largest lake.

Hydrologically, Lakes Michigan and Huron form a common "unit" of water and by area that unit is larger than Lake Superior. But, yeah Lake Superior is the worlds largest body of water called a lake.

I was just reading about E Fitz the other day. Didn't even realize it was the anniversary. That happens to me often.

Goose Bumps - I love that song and the sadness behind it gets me every time

Thx Pal

I bought a six pack tonight from the Great Lakes Brewing Company, a nice rich porter called Edmund Fitzgerald, quite good.

What actually happened to the ship, like what caused it to go down? Seems tough to imagine no survivors out of 29.

Rough seas, I think the speculation is that after cresting a few particularly large waves that she split down the middle. She was a giant ship, only 400 feet shorter than the USS Nimitz (Nuclear Carrier), so if one end were to crash down after falling 500 feet from a crested wave, it's not hard to see how the metal could buckle.

She was the first of the Mega Freighters that we see today. It's worth reading about:

Here's another good story song about a tragedy, the original by James Kleehagen is better but I couldn't find it. About the fire in Mann's Gultch back in 1949:

It was also the middle of November during a gale. The water was like 36* and the crests were taller than many ships. November storms on the Great Lakes are notoriously strong and have claimed thousands of ships.

^ lol at only 400 feet shorter than the Nimitz. Same large ships aren't even 400 feet (some WWII Destroyers and the like). But yeah, the Edmund Fitzgerald was huge in her time.

Another good read and pretty cool story (because nobody got killed) is the wreck of the SS American Star off of the Canary Islands.
