Ok, I have a question. Does the Secretary of the Treasury actually have job opportunities that would allow them to have any dramatic affect on the economy? They don't handle the receipt of funds anymore. Treasury Department oversees the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Important, certainly, but I'm trying to come up with an answer why this is, well, anything at all.

The bailout package gives this position unprecedented discretionary power over doling out billions of tax payer dollars to whomever they choose for whatever reason they choose.... as long as they tell Congress about it 30-90 days after the fact.

The tie between fiscal and monetary policy will be extremely tight with this pick. While he alone will not have "the power" to make dramatic changes, he is uniquely responsible for the management of the President's policy, if not THE architect of it himself. This pick brings ease to people in the markets because of his skill and history - especially at his age...
