Man takes $100, gets 15 years in prison

How much do the corrupt politicians and executives who steal/lose millions get again compared to him?

http://www.ktbs.com/news/Man-who-too...entence-23655/

A man who said he robbed a downtown Shreveport bank because he was out of a job and hungry has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for first-degree robbery.

Roy Brown, 54, of Audrey Lane, pleaded guilty in Caddo District Court to robbing the Capital One bank in December 2007.

Brown admitted walking up to a teller with one of his hands under his jacket and telling her it was a "stickup." The teller handed the man three stacks of bills and he took a single $100 bill, told her he was homeless and left, police said.

Brown surrendered to police the next day, telling them his mother didn't raise him that way.

Police let him sober up and interviewed him two days later. Police said Brown told them he needed money to stay in a downtown detox center, had nowhere to stay and was hungry -- so he walked up the street and robbed the bank.

havn't taken criminal justice class for a long time.

But this is going to cost us 1000s to keep him in jail over 100 bucks.

So what? If that's the case you should run the numbers on what it would cost to incarcerate you for 15 years(assuming that's the sentence for armed robbery) then steal only 95% of that from the bank. They shouldn't jail you then, cheaper to let you keep it. Let the chaos commence.

charge the guy with a misdemeanor.

he turned himself in
he stole less then 1000 dollars
he didn't use a gun

send him to jail for a year.

people do far worse and get probation

I think in this instance it would be more beneficial to give probation and put the guy to work instead. Someone who realized what they did was wrong and turned themselves in on top of the fact that he used no weapon, did no harm, and in this case seemed to be doing it out of pure desperation...I'd think that it's much more beneficial for both sides to have him work it off for the community.

i think this is another example of does the punishment fit the crime? Can we bend the rules because his intentions were good?

I agree with vcook, he went into a bank and robbed it under the pretense that he had a gun. Thats armed robbery, regardless of how much he stole, or his remorse the next day, he robbed a bank, and preported to having a gun when he did it.

True, but most likely the reason he got the sentance that he did was because he did not have a competant attorney to represent him. There are hard core repeat criminals that get a lesser sentance. The district attorney has a fiduciary duty to the people he represents to punish the criminal act in a way that will benefit the population and I just cannot believe that this sentance accomplished that.

Just my 2 cents,
Greg

african american couple in cali, i believe, both of them medical techs or nurses. Lost both of their jobs. Guy kills his 5 children and his wife.

he left a suicide note with a news agency before he committed the crime.

reminds me of the amytiville movie /real story in new york.

sounds like it happened again today.

There is nothing firm, nothing balanced, nothing durable in all the universe. Nothing remains in its original state, each day, each hour, each moment, there is change. Change is the essence of life. Embrace change as you do life. To fight change is to live in the past.

During these hard times, we have been warned about people walking in front of our trains. When I went to engineer school last month, they asked who did not run over someone and kill them. Only 5 people raised their hands, and it wasn't me. Sad.

Hmmm armed robbery (even without a gun and desparate) is no big deal? Tell that to the terrified bank employee(s).

I saw a post about it yesterday on Reddit. Somebody pulled the record on that guy. He has like 7 prior arrests varying from DUI to possession of drugs with intent to sell. He did time before and not once. Plus, if I remember correctly, he was on parole. And the bank robbery charge wasn't the only thing that time. So please cool your jets.

what? you mean he isn't just another example of justice system keeping down a person for one small mistake? shocking.

not to mention any type of robbery from a bank is a federal crime and they don't mess around. 100 dollars, 100,000 dollars... they don't know the meaning "misdemeanor"
