From 6 to 14 kids ! ?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...=mostpop_story

These parents already had 6 kids including a set of twins and now they're bringing home 8 more eventually?

Do you think this is selfish? I sure do. They havent come out and said they used fertility drugs but I dont think there's much of a chance they didn't since there have never been octuplets conceived naturally.

===================================

(CBS) Doctors say the octuplets born Monday outside Los Angeles are doing well.

But when they go home, it will be to a truly full house.

CBS News has learned the mother who gave birth to the octuplets has six other children.

An acquaintance who didn't want to be identified told Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman the mom has four older boys and two girls.

"She is young," the acquaintance says, "fairly young. She has six children already. And in those six children, she has a set of twins."

While the hospital where the octuplets were born, Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., some 17 miles southeast of L.A., hasn't confirmed that the mom used fertility drugs, there are no documented cases of naturally conceived octuplets, Kauffman points out.

Doctors say the babies are all breathing on their own. But all weigh less than four pounds and are expected to remain in the hospital for weeks.

The woman and her children live on a cul-de-sac with her parents.

A man who came to the door of the family home confirmed to Kauffman that he's the grandfather of the octuplets, but refused to speak to her.

"From what you know about this family, and this household, do you think they'll be able to support 14 kids?" Kauffman asked the acquaintance.

"Well," she responded, "so far, they've been fine with the six they have. Fourteen I don't know."

Kauffman says the neighborhood has homes with just two or three bedrooms.

It will, Kauffman concluded, "be tight!"

parents?
I thought it was a single mom who lived with her parents in a 3br house?
and while the hospital cant confirm she used fertility drugs.. and she is "totally anonymous"
her mom said she did in an interview

nice

I think that if they have they means to love and support the children then go for it. I know I could never have that many but to each their own.

I am in agreement with you, Mike. It sounds selfish. What kind of life will these kids have? 14 kids in a 3 bedroom house? I know there are kids worse off but still, I would think that these kids will have to make due with less since there are so many of them.

Irresponsible. If they were adopted or something else that is one thing, but to purposely bring that many kids into the world under those circumstances is very irresponsible.

saw this last night
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/sto...6764771&page=1
ABC actually went to the house and got yelled at...
and the fact that she is trying to be anonymous (i think) but her Mom went and did interviews GIVING HER NAME.. priceless!

Quote:
ABC News' Mike Von Fremd visited the home of the woman, who lives with her parents on a quiet cul-de-sac in the Los Angeles suburbs. With none of the typical joyful markings of a new arrival -- balloons, storks, flowers -- visible, the family and most immediate neighbors wanted nothing to do with the media.

"Do us a favor, give us our privacy and get out, shame on you, shame on you," a man from inside the house screamed at Von Fremd.

Outside the family's home, bikes and toddler toys were scattered across the front yard. Neighbors told ABC News that the woman is a single mother in her thirties who already has six other children. It appears the family will live in a three-bedroom house bursting with babies when the octuplets are released from the hospital in an estimated two months.

An 87-year-old woman who lives next door was not at all pleased.

"With our economy they way it is, with California going to hell in a handbasket, why should I be excited about this?" she asked von Fremd. "What is their future?"

Fertility experts have been extremely critical of such high-risk births, which can threaten the life of the mother. The six prior children raise an additional alarm, and the question of what accredited fertility expert would administer fertility drugs to a single mother of six.

That one family that had a grip of kids a few years back got free diapers for life and a free minivan out of it. I think they had 8 too.

Go crazy with the clomid and you too can get free stuff.

I know this won't be the case.. but go look up how much a year of college is... now look how much they predict 1 year of college to cost in 18 years.. take that # and multiply it by 8 or 14..

then go see how much 18 year old minivans are selling for

Seems like a lose lose deal when ya put it like that

Parents are supposed to pay for college? Mine missed that memo.

There's no way that mother can adequately care for 14 children on her own. Even if she lives with her parents. It's irresponsible and the children will suffer the most for it.

That's like a litter of puppies. One child is a blessing. 8 newborns plus 6? Who is this woman? The queen from Aliens?

free minivan? How many mini vans do you need for 14 kids plus adults to drive them? wait - are there even enough adults to drive them?

Free diapers doesnt begin to help when raising kids.

Hey, I'm not endorsing it; I just remember reading they got a bunch of free stuff out of birthing a baby litter. They did the whole TV talk show circuit, got free groceries, free minivan- maybe 2 vans, diapers, etc.

and I know what youre saying-believe me
but I dont think we can possibly understand what its going to take to pull this off.

If this was a fertility clinic type of pregnancy - dont fertility clinics have rules that they try to live by? Even if theyre self policed? She had 6 kids already - what clinic would impregnate her again??

IVF is thousands of dollars and that's not even guaranteed. Some women need multiple sessions.

Clomid and other drugs out there can help do it too. It works for Peter North. Though he employs the pull-out method.

When it comes out that she already has that many kids and then had invitro with 75 eggs then it becomes a decision. There is zero chance these were naturally conceived.

If she does then more power to her, but she is still one person and it is hard to split a parent's time up between 14 kids. I only have one kid and I feel I don't spend enough time with her. I assume the mansion they will need to live in is being closed on right now? They kinda need it. They are not sardines.

Abortion is a polarizing topic unto itself and wasn't even mentioned as an option until you brought it up.

Raising one kid, even more so 14 has a lot more to do with being able to "afford it." Even if she's the richest person in the world, it's still irresponsible. Simply because you can't naturally have 8 children at one time. Until I'm proven otherwise, I'm convinced she had to try to get this pregnant. Living with mommy and daddy in a 3 bedroom house and having 6 kids was more than enough.

Where's the father? Do all 14 kids have the same father?

These babies are all under 4 pounds at full term. They'll be in the hospital for weeks.

I never said she didn't have in-vitro. What I was saying is, it's not like you decide how many kids you're gonna have when you go thru in-vitro. Hence, if she truly just wanted one kid, what options did she have after she found out she had 8? There is a reason she's only the second woman in US to ever give birth to octuplets. Shit happens. Again, wasn't her choice to have 8.

First off.. I thought the clinics limited the amount of eggs they implanted to keep this from happening? Did she do it here? Did she go to mexico to do it cheaper?

Second.. If she is so well to do.. Why does she live with her parents.. Possibly a moot point.. Maybe they live with her.. Maybe the family is just that close.. Maybe she has help.. but maybe something isn't quite right upstairs... Maybe she is a bit Blago if you know what I mean...

third..
When multiple eggs take often they "cull the herd" they have a term for it.. selective reduction.... in essence they choose the less viable ones or smaller or weaker.. or maybe they just do it at random.. and reduce the amount of babys in the baby hole...
My wife asked me what I would do if we were ever in that situation (wasn't a probability for us.. ours was all natural.. but I think she was talking about that John and Kate + 8 show)... I honestly don't know what I would do.. I don't think I could choose to have *some* of my children aborted.. but that's me.. That said.. I wouldn't have them fill her guts up with baby caviar and coat it all with Peter North choad either.. If we were going to have to go that extra mile to do this.. We would do it right.. Not try to save money by filling it all up and going all hail mary (the pass.. not the lady)

Last off..
I don't think weeks.. I think months.. like at least 2 months...
I wonder if she has insurance.. I wonder if the state of cali and or the fed govt is funding this endeavor
