PTG, average speed...!

A person swims 1.5 km/hr for 30 min, runs 9 km/hr for 15 min, and bikes 12 km/hr for 1 hour, find their average speed.

Average speed = Total Distance (km)/Total Time (hr)

Let swimming = D1/T1, running = D2/T2, and biking = D3/T3

Total time = (T1+ T2 + T3), = (30 min + 15 min + 60 min), = (105 min)*(1hr/60 min), = 7/4 hr

Total Distance = D1 + D2 + D3

D1=(3/2 km/hr)*(30min)*(1hr/60min)= 3/4 km
D2=(9 km/hr)*(15min)*(1hr/60min)= 9/4 km
D3=(12 km/hr)*(1hr)= 12 km

Total Distance =
3/4km + 9/4km + 12 km = 15km

Average Speed = TD/TT = (15km)/(7/4 hr) = (60 km)/(7 hr) or (60/7) km/hr... or 9 km/hr if you're using significant figures

There ya go...now do some conversion factors on your own!

I guess if your figuring out how at what speed/direction they'd fly after crashing their bike into a car going at a certain angle to them..

After taking chemistry and getting half the problems wrong on a test cause of sig figs, I really hate them.
Just thought I would share.

Them sig figs are a tricky mofo. Chem is the only class where it actually matters. In any engineering class you use 2 or 3 decimal places. I think Chem is the only class I ever got marked off for sig figs. They go easier on the 2nd, 3rd, and final exam though. What professor do you have?
