I posted the picture before Phelps had even commented on the photo.

And it's pretty obvious it's him. Look at any other picture of him since the Olympics and he's wearing that same diamond studded Omega watch. I'm guessing not many people his age can afford that watch.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the watch, I know most people probably don't care but he is going to lose $$$$ on endorsements for sure.

I doubt it hinders his performance in any way. I bet it helps him, he eats more, sleeps better, and the dope numbs teh pain from hard training.

It could just be the intrawebz rumors, but does smoking weed help increase your lung capacity? I thought I remembered reading Lance Armstrong used it while training for the Tour De France for that reason.

I doubt Phelps was using it for that purpose, more just curious.

no one gives a shit if he smokes pot, except the companies that offer him endorsements. I'm not commenting on his pot use, I'm commenting on stupidity regarding possible endorsement money which is seriously compromised now.

Uhh, never heard that before. Marijuana generally burns much hotter than a cigarette, therefore burning more mitochondria in your lungs than normal tobacco.

Besides the money, I think Olympic rules state that if he tests positive in a drug test, it's a 4 year ban, which means his Olympic career is pretty much over.

Pot is viewed differently than peformance enhancing drugs and the Olympic comittee already said they have no rules for this. No ban will be enforced.

Quote:
Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs, according to David Howman, executive director of the World Anti-Doping Agency. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

"We don't have any jurisdiction," Howman said. "It's not banned out of competition. It's only if you test positive in competition."

Phelps returned to the pool a couple of weeks ago to begin preparations for this summer's world championships in Rome. He plans to take part in his first post-Olympics meet in early March, a Grand Prix event in Austin, Texas.

Actually most of his sponsors can care less as well. They are all releasing statements that essentially say "well, he learned his lesson and that's fine by us"

I don't disagree but the corporations paying the multi-million dollar sponsorships probably do.

"how will this look to the 8-year olds that look up to him" B.S. is sure to come up.

But I also think that is a fair argument if you take the millions of dollars to be a brands marketing man. You should have to live up to what the brand expects of you.

If you want to go out and party and do this kinda stuff, great, fine. But you can't take the money and put yourself out there as a spokesman and a role model also.

It's too bad though, that something like this can be blown way out of proportion.
